I was offered a teaching position and was given the option of a company- sponsored visa or applying for a Working Holiday Visa. Are there any advantages that come with either of these options? I'm staying for a one year contract only.
Also, G Cthulhu, I wonder if you have any affiliation with the Cthulhu members in Waikato?

WORKING HOLIDAY
ADVANTAGES
you dont need a sponsor or a degree to get a WHV
Available to Kiwis but not to Americans
Can work for more than obe employer or change jobs more easily without changing sponsors
Less restrictions on the kinds of jobs you can do on WHV but you cant do bar work or work in the water trade.
Employer doesnt have to sponsor you
DISADVANTAGES
only for one year and not renewable after one year
may pay a higher rate of income tax on a WHV
competing for jobs with people who have degrees and teaching experience
generally pretty low on the teaching totem pole status wise.
Some employers may not consider you for jobs on a WHV
Zero job security
No sponsor means you are on your own if you get into trouble with police, hospitalised or need to find an apartment guarantor
WORKING VISA
ADVANTAGES
Renewable visa
Can work full time for one employer
reasonably stable and guaranteed income and benefits
Sponsor is responsible for you if you get into trouble
As you have a legal visa and working full time you have better protection regarding labour laws, work conditions and if you need to contact a union.
DISADVANTAGES
Contracted for one year with same employer but can leave if you give sufficient notice
restrictions on what you can do for jobs on that visa. |

More disadvantages to Work Visa...
If you are here on a tourist visa first, changing to work visa may not always be smooth. There are some shady employers who ask that you work on a tourist visa (illegal) while your paperwork is processed, and then they wind up dumping you with no legal recourse.
More advantages to a working holiday visa...
You avoid the above hassles.
You can come to Japan and job hunt more easily and for a longer period than a person who comes on a tourist visa. |

Wot others said. And remember that the WHV position is, legally, for fewer hours and almost always lower pay. I'd be wary of being messed about on the tax too. But there are labouring jobs you can (empahsis on the /can/ part there!) get on a WHV that pay better than most teaching jobs - I know someone that spent twelve months shovelling bolts into a bagging machine five hours a day that was paid just over 6 million yen for the year, plus free housing. All depends what you want out of Japan. :)

Not really, but I do know several of the people from there. Know Dillon do you? I'm from Canterbury, if that makes things any clearer. :) |
