Sorry. I know it wasn't directed at me. But it looks like African countries score lowest after all on income disparity and HDI (Human Development Index) Here's a stat sheet the site generated.

What I think those web sites point out is that there's plenty of poverty and wealth disparity around the globe.

The links also mentioned that the disparity is growing, sadly.

Sad that Latin American countries comprise 9 of the top 20. I'm surprised that Mexico ranks where it does. I thought it was better off.

ls650: Apparently you are either incapable or unwilling to read books or newspapers or even let your fingers Google in order to find out something about the area of the world where you are living and from which you are more than happy to accept a salary.

Some of us have already had this conversation, and have been completely unwilling to accept any role in Latin America beyond that of a lazy parasite.

moonraven, when you talk about the first world are you really referring to the first world or just the USA? Here in the UK we have some of the least biased press in the world - in terms of variety of newspapers and points of view available on news items, and of course the good old BBC. Plus the fact that our press reports much more widely than the American (or Mexican) press on worldwide issues and not just UK ones - perhaps that's what comes from being such a relatively small country. Not that everyone here reads all the info available or that we dont have some downright awful rags, but I think it's better than the US. Also, having worked on a Mexican newspaper, I wouldn't really say that they were entirely uncorrupt or free, although they maybe more so than in the US.

I believe I indicated the US--and quite clearly. However, since you brought it up--I don't believe the UK has much of a free media anymore either--not since the three top heads rolled more than a year ago at the BBC (I watched the debates on that in the House of Commons), and there have been increasing complaints surfacing in Internet in regard to UK journalists being censored. I do read a fair number of articles from The Guardian, and can say that they are heads above those in the US press--but that's still not saying much.

I don't know which Mexican paper you worked on, but La Jornada is one of the best newspapers in the world (with plenty of international awards and plenty of harrassment from the US Embassy folks to prove it). There is another thread--best news sites in Spanish with commentary by both DeLa Costa and myself, so will not repeat it here. Proceso is a damn fine weekly news magazine, too.

ls650: I WOULDN'T. I have given presentations on this topic often enough to know my stuff. In fact I gave an institutional seminar on La Reforma Agraria (excerpt from my book in progress in Spanish)--which addressed this topic in June of 2003 at the Puerto Angel campus of the university for which you work. (The only seminar ever given by someone in Idiomas, by the way.)

Try finding out something about the part of the world you're living in for yourself. Laziness is a poor trait in anyone, and laziness in regard to educating oneself is unacceptable in an "educator".
