|
|
Recently there was a thread about this series. I enjoy teaching from it, but the biggest problem I have is the out-datedness of it. Archaic references to "popular" celebrities and even the pictures and references to modern technology was looking a bit old. So, I sent an email to Cambridge Press asking whether or not they would update this series and this is the response I received:

Dear Kevin,
Thank you for you email inquiring about a new edition of Interchange.
At the end of 2004 we indeed published Interchange Third Edition. All the
core components of the series are now published and our web site details the many chnages we've made to the series. I hope you like what you see and wish you continued success..

I went ahead and followed the link, but my office computer does not have Adobe, so I can't look at the sample pages (I'll try at home tonight). Regardless, having an updated version would be cool to own. I have not seen these in Hangzhou (and maybe there is too much of a surplus of the older version in China to warrant having the new version). Has anyone seen these books? I can easily make a trip to Shanghai if they are there, but otherwise, I'll have to have a copy sent to me. I don't know if/when I'll teach English again outside the US, but I would be interested in looking at these new versions to see how much has changed. The price for student books are very low so it would be worth the investment. |

Jack Richards is still the author? Back in 1982, I attended one of his presentations, at Hong Kong U. He's getting rich, I guess. But the team should consider:

*It has become evident to many teachers of ESL
students that most of the available texts and
materials are based on artificial sequencing of
grammatical structures and stilted, often irrelevant,
dialogues and topics.
(Rodriguez and White)
The episode hypothesis, which states that "text (i.e. discourse in any form) will be easier to produce, understand, and recall to the extent that it is motivated and structured episodically...these ideas lead to the supposition that perhaps second language teaching would be more successful if it incorporated principles of good story
writing along with the benefits of sound linguistic analysis." (Oller--1963)
AND...they should spend some extra money and get some voices with
acting ability...once they get some good writers...
Here in China, it's possible to develop in-country/low-profile materials based upon movies---audio and print. Magical!!!
