A Reflection on being told once too often by Chinese and Foreigners alike that my food choices are crap.....

Waigouren in China, whether from America or Zimbabwe, apparently have one hypocrisy in common.

When the Lao Wai fancy a taste of home, some other culinary choice differing from the Chinese grub they have gulped down for a few months, they head to the local Mcdonalds.

Even the vegans, anti-fast food ranters, and mega corporation haters amongst the noshers head to the golden arches for their fix of western delicacies at least once during their stays in China.

And they eat those fries, Big Macs, Chicken Nuggets, Fillet o'fishes, and Apple pies with gusto.

All the time, as they gulp down the food like a starving dog deprived of a bone for months, they complain.

They complain how it is junk food "...mmm...slurp...mmm". They complain how Mcdonalds is an evil corporation "...smack...mmm...smack...". They complain about how the workers are exploited "mmm...yum...mmm". They complain about the service being slow "mmm, ummm, mmm.".

If you eat the stuff. Don't complain.

If you don't eat the stuff, don't make the mistake of thinking you are morally superior to those of us who do. Leave that to the Chinese.

Have you tried the hot banana pie yet? Oh my god, it is a slice of heaven! And double cheeseburgers are not only 8rmb now, but they have it in a value meal (17rmb). Now if Hangzhou's McDs would only serve western-style breakfast, I could stay here forever (not really, but I WOULD be a happy guy). I miss my hotcakes and sausage (with extra butter and syrup).

When I went back home last year, Mackers was completely different they are trying to sell healthier food, salads and fruit. At the airport I bought a toasted sandwich, no grease it was great., but we are going through a change I don't know how well the Mackers over here would receive it

Don['t forget McCafe - serving freshly-brewed real coffee. Saw them in Peking, Hong Kong, and I am sure they are also in Shanghai, though not (just yet) in Guangzhou...(there are a grand total of 3 STARBUCKS in Guangzhou...).

Xintiendi has a McCafe... and too many Starbucks to count.... They also have Coffee Lox... which is not my favorite coffee shop in China!!!!!!!! (left cell phone there and got it back!!!!!!!!)

Yes, I can symphathise.

The most unbelieveable thing I've ever had was in a McDonalds in Budapest. They serve a Chocolate pie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In Taiwan they DO serve the breakfast menu! (Another reason why I'm going to work in Taiwan next time.)

Speaking of corporations on the news I saw a Lebanese man complaining about U.S. corporations taking over the middle East. Do you know what logo was on a building behind him? Virgin Megastore.

The first time I ate in Macdonald's was in Paris in 1974. I remember the restaurant was on the Champs d"Eleyse (sp) and they served beer. I couldn't believe it. How exotic beer with a Big Mac seemed at the time. I think that I ate there three or four times during the week I was in Paris.

This time around, when I left the boonies during the Spring Break and travelled to Hangzhou, I had a latte in the Starbuck's just down the road from the youth hostel on West Lake. I sat there for two hours and nursed the coffee while looking at the sophisticated office girls. It was great. the place was warm and it felt like true luxury. The washrooms were clean and had toilet paper and paper towels. There are good reasons why these places are popular all over the world.

How long will it take to get this thread get removed? Not Job-related, definately, unless Chinese McDonald's are a desireable place for foreigners to work! Whle I'm posting, however, let me tell you about a pet peeve of mine. I get sick and tired of people whining about other people whining! Complaining about minor matters is a natural impulse that lets off some steam. It bothers me that I'm susceptible to McDonald's draw, kinda like being attracted to an bad ex-girlfriend. Why is it so hard to listen to people express dissatisfaction? If you can't listen to minor gripes, than stay away from people altogether and keep to yourself! You know I'd love to visit my favorite hometown diner in foreign countries, but that just isn't going happen. McD's will have to do.
