Greenpeace recently found traces of dioxin in eggs in the Izmit area. Other areas may also have the same problem.

Greenpeace found harmful levels of dioxin and HCB in chicken eggs in Izmit. Once a person eats an egg containing dioxin and/or HCB, the body can no longer get rid of these substances - ever!

This may lead to permanent damage to the hormonal and reproductive systems in the body. In addition great harm may be caused to the nervous and immune systems of the body.

Ghost's advice - be very careful with the eggs you eat in Turkey at this time. And try to ensure that they have passed quality control tests.

Take some samples to a lab. for a test. And this is not a joke.

This is not a joke. Ask your Turkish friends to confirm what was written in some of the Turkish Press today - they will see that this is a threat to health.

Better to be safe than sorry.

1. Avoid eggs produced in the Izmit area.

2. If you do consume eggs try to limit to not more than 3 per week.

3. Be careful with other dairy products which use eggs, like 'sutlac' - a creamy kind of pudding for dessert.

Dioxin and HCB are no laughing matters. Watch your health, because not many others will do it for you.

This may or may not be true. If this infromation had come from someone else it would carry more weight and it would have been taken with consideration that it may need. Confused

As it is our local ( or not so local ) Turkey expert has again come up with a negative spin on Turkey this time its the eggs we have to watch out for.
Well, as ghost had writen in the past what can we expect from these

What's dioxin? How does it get into eggs? Should I be more worried about eating eggs here than, say, breathing? Drinking water? If dioxin doesn't leave my body and is able to enter eggs, then isn't it safe to assume I already contain dioxin? Or is it more a matter of trying to limit my dioxin content?

Somehow I feel this dire health risk is among the least of my worries, down there with making a face and having it freeze like that, and accidentally swallowing a bug that touched poo...

Talk to your Turkish friends who will confirm the warnings in the Turkish newspapers (Huriyet) about the danger from dioxin in the eggs, especially those produced in the Izmit area. But other areas may also be affected.

As with anything in life - there are risks, and the more you diminish the risks, the better chances you have.

Dioxin is cumulative in the body. Once you pass certain levels, illnesses can result.

Turkey is not the only place where problems with dioxin have occurred. In fact, in recent years Germany and Belgium have also had problems with dioxin contaminating chicken and eggs. And, ironically, the organic versions were more susceptible to produce damage in those countries.

In Turkey the problem may occur when the soils are contaminated with the harmful substances.

Going into panic mode will not solve the problem, but one feels that you should restrict your egg intake to minimize potential intake of the harmful substance.

Limiting eggs to three per week, would be one way to limit the risks. As eggs are so commonplace in the Turkish diet.

I heard that the majority of Turkish chickens are infected with the kind of illnesses that would have them killed in the U.K but that doesn't happen here . So do we stop eating chicken as well Ghost? This health scare is the least of our worries here ,what with water and air pollution and crazy drivers .
