When I was young I loved the the full moon parties.

There was a DV8 DJ about ten years ago that I new who went to

Thailand to open a bed and breakfast at the beach sort of place, but I

lost touch with him. He was an easy going Brit, nice bloke. I sometimes wonder if he is there.

I support Tiki 100%. If it happens it should be plugged in Taiwan, Korea and the other regional esl hubs.

And that is basically the best advice you can give for travelling anywhere.
It never ceases to amaze me that people simply don't save money for emergencies.

Ya! And like Aristotle, anyone who likes the East Asian lifestyle and would want to continue it should find a nice spot as their plan B so when the day comes, you go.

THailand and Vietnam can be excellent plan B's. There is probably some nice deals on ocean front Condos in post tsunami Thailand right?

As far as good get away spots go, Thailand is at the top of any list. With Thailand abandoning previous restrictions that allowed only a few nationalities to own property or businesses in Thailand, now anyone can buy a place and start a business on equal terms as a local.
Viet Nam on the other hand takes the Taiwanese approach to business and land ownership using racial prerequisites to determine business and property rights. Viet Nam is also similar to Taiwan in that the government reserves the right to obligate forfeiture of foreign owned businesses and land.
In Phucket it was possible to purchase a little Tiki bar or a small house for around 350,000 NT. The real estate market has taken a big hit because of the Tsunami and some real bargains are now possible all over Thailand. The visa system in Thailand is much more straight forward as well, just pay the fee and you can get a long term visa.
Of course like Taiwan, Thailand is a third world country but much more hospitable and open to foreign investment.
I am working on a plan now to teach for 6 months on Taiwan during the summer and fall. Then switch positions with a partner in Thailand who would take over my teaching job on Taiwan and I take over management of the Tiki bar in Thailand.
If the working conditions for foreign teachers continue to deteriorate on Taiwan and I suspect they will. It would be very easy to do my teaching stretch in a better country.
As a plan B, this one was the easiest and most desirable.
Very Happy

Sounds pretty good to me.

How feasible is it then, based on the above, to open bushibans in Bangkok for say 1 000 000NT?

I was last there in I think 1999. Rents were heading North again because the Asian currency crisis was over, the new transit system stimulated investments around each MRT stations and foreign investers were talking about putting Thailand back on the thumbs up list.

Actually A, since I have brought it up, why not comment on bushiban investment in a general way, contrasting Tai and Thai locations, the good, the bad and the ugly side of things.

Sorry, I have never taught in Thailand.
Most foreigners living in Thailand own their own business for the simple reason that they are allowed to do so on equal terms as a local. Language Schools are not preferred small businesses because of the high operating cost.
Here on Taiwan the government actively deters non Chinese from opening small businesses much the same way they are now attempting to deter non ethnic Chinese from teaching on Taiwan.
You might try the Thailand forum for more info.
Good luck.

That must be a recent change. The last time I was Thailand there was still alot of red tape (Lawyer required) and you still needed a Thai business partner.

Recently the Thai government have been very pro BIG business but I'm not sure it helps the locals much.
