re: Zhejiang Province

It has come to our attention that the education ministry has made a new policy that requires students to have more rest during the summer vacation period and therefore the situation of schools to promote summer programs has been restricted. Has anyone else heard of this new policy?

From my understanding, it is now much more difficult for schools to host these programs and there are fewer students to be recruited.

It seems to me that finally some commonsense and reason has materialised out of the gray-blue! I applaud this decision!

Our summer programs are set up and a go. (1200 students for the first one)

I would like to see them continue.

Well the same news came to our school. The Zhejiang Min of Edu has sent a memo to all schools in the provience "suggesting" that schools relieve some of the pressure on students. This is in response to numerous student sucides that recently happened. It was suggested that schools allow students more time off campus (for the students who board at school-ie 2 days at home a week instead of 1 or 0), to lessen the test and homework load, and to give students more time to enjoy other things besides a book in a classroom, ie sports, music etc. Our school after receiving the memo now gives bi-monthly exams instead of monthly, added an extra hr of free time a day so the students can play sports or do what they want, instead of the 20 (less the one day) at hoem a week the students now leave on friday afternoon and return to school on sunday afternoon, and the admin asked us teachers to lessen if possible the amount of homework given to the students.
I am directly employed by the Min of Edu and have asked to get a copy of the memo. If they do provide me a copy I will post it here. J

I have no idea, but I'm intrigued by your user name.

Is your name Keith Keath? Or did you misspell one of them?? Or do you use both spellings interchangeably? Sorry to pry.

Zhejiang is one of the most progressive provinces, and, aside from Shanghai proper, it happens to be my favorite one.

If positive changes in Education like this one continue, no doubt they'll be from this province. By stark contrast, on the other side of Shanghai you have Jiangsu province - one of the toughest places for Education! Many stories come out from there of teachers who have high workloads, and students who have to be in school 7 days a week, etc.

Excellent news. I am stunned. There is hope.

(Also, how do you pronounce "Keath" ? Is it like "death" ?)

Yes, this information is correct. The students now go home every weekend, instead of every other weekend as they use to. About 10 percent of the students still stay on campus every other weekend, .... too far to go home, parents want them to stay at school?? or for what ever reasons?? So now the ones that stay on campus are supervised, they sit in class from six am to 9 pm , for SAt and Sun, studying or doing homework. This change in weekends at school is for grade one and two of senior middle school. Grade three still stay here every other weekend as they are preparing for college entrance exams. I was not aware of the reasoning for the change,. The teachers are happy that they have weekends off.
