| I just rented a movie today called "Distant" (Uvak in Turkish, I think) and loved the cinematography, story, acting, etc. I don't know the names of the director or actors, but I would love to see anyhting else they have done. I believe it was done in 2002... Have you guys seen this? I would really love to know what the Turks in the forum think of it... |

| Nuri Bilge Ceylan's film....he is a photographer indeed i mean an artist...believe it or not but he is not very well known in Turkey....( never has a comsumer society product so thats why not popular in Turkey.) |

| Thank you for letting me know his name and some information - there was an interview with him at the end of the movie and he seems like an amazing man! Now I can google him and see if I can find more movies or photographs by him. Thanks so much whynotme! |

travelingirl68: if you're interested in seeing turkish movies, i highly recommend "9 (nine)" by umit unal if you can get a hold of it. or tabutta rovasata (somersault in a coffin) by dervis zaim. or kac para kac (a run for money) by reha erdem.

that is not entirely true. since winning the grand prix at cannes in 2003, he's been featured in mainstream media quite a bit. you know how it is with turkish media- you're not newsworthy until you're internationally recognized, regardless of your talent - well, sometimes not even then. the thing is, anyone who's remotely interested in film would know who he is. and your veggie guy at your local pazar might know of "the film (not a movie indeed) that won at cannes". he's obviously not a sinan cetin cause he would never host a show like "film gibi." however, give a little more credit to your fellow citizens whynotme... |

i love his films and his other work once went to one of his workshop, he is also my friends ex husband ...i did not say anything negative about him ....it is a shame that his not very popular in Turkey..... |

| Thanks for the recommendations! I am in the USA right now, and was surprised I could even find one Turkish movie in a Blockbuster's, but I will search for the others too! |

i don't think you can find the movies i mentioned at blockbuster's. you might want to try more alternative artsy rental places or university libraries. you'd be surprised what you can find there.
i've recently rented "in july" (temmuzda) at blockbuster. it's a road movie by a turkish director (fatih akin) - the guy from run lola run is in it. they also carry "steam" (hamam) by ferzan ozpetek.
and last but not least...
http://www.tulumba.com has many turkish dvd's you can purchase. i've purchased many products from them - very reliable. just make sure to contact them about subtitles for vcd's.

I've used "lola and billy the kid" in my gender class. A tough, in your face film, but very interesting. And, yes, it is Turkish. |

I admit the only Turkish film I have ever bought on VCD were "G.O.R.A." and "Habamam Sınıfı Askerde".
I saw the first Vizontele film. A good film if you an find it anywhere. My students also liked the sequel "Vizontele Tuuba".
I'd also recommend you look around for Head-On (Turkish title is Duvari Karsi). Not a Turkish film per se but a very good. Its was a Fatih Akin film and I've never heard of Nuri Bilge Ceylan. |
