I am a primary teacher from the UK, looking for work in Japan, I recently turned down a job with Berlitz, Sendei, as I would prefer a job that has a monthly/yearly salary, and looks after their staff a little better.

I am still in the UK, teaching until august, so I cannot get to Japan until then.

Can anyone recommend a location suited to a keen snowfreak, who is not overly keen to be in a large city.

I also prefer to stay away from the larger corporate schools.

Any advice, contacts, would be wicked.

Niigata.

There are 3 resorts within about a 40-minute drive from my house/school. The closest is about 20 minutes. I got a season pass and went to my local resort probably 30 times. Once it closed at the end of March, there were still several resorts to choose from--further away in Niigata-ken, and also in Yamagata, Fukushima, and Nagano (all easy day or weekend trips). I'm going out for my last day of riding today, in fact...

Nagano. The Japanese Alps are amazing. And the above post is right, Niigata is great too. Hokkaido has some good slopes too, but I think the other places are nice because you can access the cities easily. Which is may or may not be important to you.

Hokkaido has some schools and great powder though I believe a lot of people request Saporro for that reason when applying for the big schools so there may be a waiting list. Nagano is really popular too.
Even from Kansai we went about 4 hours by car north to a slope but it wasn't in very good condition. Really icey when I went-may have been close to the end of the season.

My snowboardin friend spent most of the season travellin to Nagano every weekend but still goes all wet and drippy when reminissin and photo-showin about her New Years trip to Hokkiado. 'Look at the Snow!' 'It's powder! It's all powder! So deep!" etc etc etc.
