Hi, I am teaching now in north east of Thailand, and I recently was offered to teach in a private college as a only "Falang" there.
It seems that they quite eager to hire me because beside regular English I can also teach IT technical English to their students.
They offered me a salary of 12k Baht a month for a full time position, 8-16pm, 5 days a week.
It's seems, a little bit low. What's the average salary for that kind of job, outside Bangkok, I mean ?
Besides they offered to arrange my work permition, but didn't mention about medical insurance.
Wait for a reply,
Shayfic |

Shayfic, I would treat the offer with the contempt it deserves, the salary level offered is derisory. You are being offered the same deal as a Thai staff member with basic teaching skills and around ten years service without the perks of the job.
You are being invited to teach the staff at the school , when your employers consider that you have achieved the standard they require for their staff it will ''Goodbye from him and goodbye from me''.
Cabbage looking you may be ,but are you that green ?
As an aside the salary level for the position you have been offered should be around the minimum of 22.000. Baht to 26.000. Baht level , plus acommodation per month, with around 12 to 15 hours maximum teaching time per week, this is according to the rates of pay and standard conditions offered within the Thai education university sector. |

Dear Thabita, The reason I asked is because, so far I worked in private schools around, on a base of hours demand. therefore the payment was different.
I'm quoting from ECC Thailand web site" The guaranteed minimum salary for Full-time teachers working in the provinces is between 19,000 and 23,000 Baht per month for 100 working hours per month (average 25 hours per week), although you can do more if you wish to supplement your income. "
That's probably what did you mean. Isn't it ? |

Shayfic.
The figures that you quote of 19.000. to 23.000. Baht per month of 100 hours is the figure that ECC would pay you.
Remember that the payment from a school to ECC for a contract teacher would be in the region of 50.000.Baht per month.
Cast the mote from your eyes, you are debassing your value and indeed compounding the felony of slave labour rate payments to teachers in Thailand.
Would you consider working in your country of origin for a quarter of the normal salary level ? Your professional bodies and indeed the local authorities would indeed bar such actions. I am presuming that you are non Thai of course in this scenario.
As an aside the figure you quote of around 10.000. to 12.000 Baht per month is less than we pay our Thai assistant classroom teachers here in our school . That is for a 4 hour day, 5 days per week, plus 1 hour a day for preparation and general assisting duties. Equates to a 100. hour month in all. On top of that the teaching assistants all get 8 weeks a year paid holiday too.
No I reiterate , do not even consider the post at the salary level offered. I have no idea of how long you have resided in Thailand or if you are within a stable relationship here and whether that may influence your thinking on this matter. But you are really being given the rather dirty end of the stick in the proposed deal. |

It seems to me that the more people are willing to accept ultra low wages, the less others will be willing to pay...We all know nobody is going to Thailand to get rich, but it would be nice to save a little for the trip "home" or someplace else as well as a little traveling in the country.
Of course it does depend on one's qualifications as a teacher..degree, no degree... So what would happen if you said, "I need 20,000?" I'd want at least $500 US... make the choice that's right for you of course... |

Well, the first problem is that you are in the Northeast, the poorest region of the country, so you can't really expect much of a salary unless you move.
Second, you have to remember that "Shayfic" isn't a native speaker and has a diploma [not a degree?] so yes, he will probably have to accept lower than normal pay, but 12K/mo. is TOO LOW especially if they're talking about a 40-hour week.
I would suggest circa 15 - 20K baht/mo for a set number of teaching hours, maybe 20 - 22 with the rest of your hours free [as in free of work]. That's still not great, but it's more realistic. Free accommodation might be nice, but then you sacrifice privacy. Also, you might ask them to pay for your work permit, if they can get you one, which is now 3000/year. |
