This doesn't have a lot to do with EFL strictly speaking, but it's something I've been thinking about of late.
I've often heard it said that male colleges (something which, for obvious reasons, I have very little experience of!) tend to have rather weak students, because so many Saudi men of means and/or ability go abroad to study, something which is much less often the case for Saudi women.
My question is: do these men go abroad for Bachelor's Degrees or only for Post-Grad study?
If the latter case, does that mean that most third-level institutions in KSA are internationally recognised or accredited (is there a difference between the two terms?) Or can you be accepted onto a Post-Grad programme without a recognised undergraduate degree? |

It used to be - when we actually had Arab students allowed in (an increasingly rare thing these days) - that I mostly saw BAs, or MAs who had also previously studied overseas. But, I think it depended on what part of the country you were in.
Based on what people say there, wouldn't it have to be true that it is mostly BAs?
I wonder where they are going now that the vast majority can't get visas for the US?

Actually, recent news reports have said that the sharp decline in the number of Saudi (and probably other Gulfie) students in the US is due not so much to more stringent US visa controls, but to the fact that, for fairly obvious reasons, many Saudis simply don't feel comfortable being in the US anymore. In fact, I read somewhere that US unis are doing all they can to encourage Saudi students to study at their institutions, but that Saudis are reluctant to come. |

The universities are begging them to come back. They have been hurt financially by the disappearance of one of their major high tuition paying markets. But there has been a lot of talk about how even the students that want to come... those who want to complete degrees already started... even they can't get visas out of the US government.
But, naturally there are many student that chose not to come back or to go elsewhere, and I can't say that I blame them.
