Yes Justin, I most certainly agree! And what's funny is that internationally (or at least emong much of the Latin American world and Spain), Chileans are considered to have one of the worst accents. Not so much "worst" but more in that they speak poorly and fast and are difficult to understand, even for native speakers in neighbouring countries. I personally love the way they speak. The jargon and "shilenismos" are so fun to learn and you can really impress people here by using them with the locals! Exclamation

WELCOME TO ARGENTINA, ALEX!!!! Very Happy
I hope you enjoy your stay here...

Good luck and let us know how you are doing here ! Wink

Muchas gracias, amiga!

I was very surprised when I checked this board and found my old thread had been resurrected!

Im in Mendoza, having a great time and trying to build up my teaching hours. The situation looks promising... Its all so much more fun than my crappy job in England.

Incidentally I think Argentina was the right choice - I find Chilean Spanish very difficult to understand!

So does everyone else, in the beginning. But it's worth it!

What did you do, just move to Mendoza and wander around? How are you getting hours? Posters, friends, etc?

How's your Spanish improving?

Yes. Very Happy

I looked up various institutes in the phone book, then paid them a call with my CV in hand. As it was right at the start of the teaching season, this was quite successful.

I need a few more hours, so Im going to start advertising in the private universities. And Im hoping for more private students through friends of friends.

My Spanish is passable (basic conversations with not too much past tense), but I REALLY need to practise more!

That's awesome Alex... glad to know there was success! And just out of curiosity, have you crossed the Andes to see just exactly what you're missing in Santiago? Harhar..

If youre in Santiago and would like to meet up, drop me a PM. Smile

Shocked Oh, we're watching you alright... Shocked

(BTW TurBus and Andesmar are the best companies to take you over to Santiago, avoid Cata, Tac and El Rapido-el rapido took 14 hours when the crap bus broke down...or you could just take a 45 minute flight...) Ooo and in 3 months more you'll have the pleasure of santiago in winter when you'll have trouble seeing your hand in front of your face due to the smog Very Happy Should be ok at the moment though..have fun...if possible...and avoid the YHA on Cienfuegos at all costs...)

Hahaha so true.

Alex, are you coming for the day or for the entire weekend? If so, you should take a day trip to Via del Mar (where I am) and see the ocean! And also, a day to breath would be nice, too! Smile

Thanks for the bus/hostel advice, matttheboy. Smile

Im going for the weekend, but Im still not exactly sure whether to go for Santiago or Via - Ill decide when I buy my ticket tomorrow morning I suppose!

.... I can feel the eyes watching me all the time now Confused
... even when Im not on the internet... Shocked
... the time of purification is at hand... Twisted Evil

Alex,
How was Santiago? How does it compare to Mendoza? I am coming to Argentina in a few weeks. I will be in BsAs. but am intrigued by Mendoza. I am thinking of making a trip out there in a few months for some snowboarding. What is the word???

I went to Via del Mar in the end. Which was nice! I havent been to Santiago, but those who have tell me Mendoza is far superior - much much less pollution for a start! There is snowboarding in the Mendoza region (I want to go too) but I think the nearest place (Las Lenas) is about 2 hours away.
