All is relative!! I recall the airport back then... not the most exciting place I've ever had a layover. I had friends who were there then and the excitement was 'progressive dinners.'

I must admit to being dumfounded by it all. Funny how absence makes the heart grow fonder. I remember some of the things you fellows posted when you were there.

Try the 'Ridges" disco on a Thursday night, all day seshes at the rugby club on match days, the seaside resort down at sealine, the Ramada bar for lunchtime scoofing, the TexMex in the lobby of the Marriot and a host of Filipina singers doing dodgy takes of Tina Turner songs...man...never had it so good...then I had to go to work...that was a reality check. |

hi all, new to Doha (two weeks exactly) and having a ball of fun!
Work is great, socialising is different to back home (Melbourne Australia), however those that want to winge go home, those that want to party and enjoy life, call me!
Accomodation is an issue with most expats i gather, but thats life!
Qatarchic, I do not live in a compound, rather an apartment block, and whilst there are concerns regarding safety, it is a manageable one.
All the expats iknow who have arranged their own self accomodation are all saying that their rents are rising to around 5500 QAR per month.
Our employer provides free accomodation in twin share furnished apartments, including utilities (electricty, water) telephone, and basic electrical appliances.
Oh, on the currencyside, travellers cheques are hard to exchane at banks unless you have an account there (which takes time) or you have to use currency exchanges, USD cash is much easier.
Also, bring you GSM mobile telephone (cell phones) and just purchase a prepaid HALA sim card from Qtel, its the way most people communicate.
Hope this helps and feel free to ask any more questions.
John

Don't worry Qatarchic you'll get places a lot cheaper than that.Like I said, the other option is a flatshare. The museum apartments in Salata Kadim are basic but about 3,500 a month. You can find places cheaper though.Get our employer to do the footwork. The chances are your sponsor is well connected.Who are you going to work for by the way? |

Qatarchic,
I think you can find a nice furnished/semi furnished one bedroom for around 3,000-3,5000, depending on the area. |

I think Doha is at its peak of progression that's why people are needed to support its progression. Imagine, the Qataris are just 1/4 of the whole population.
Anyway, hope to meet you there! And update me if you do find a good flat to stay in as I would also be looking for one myself.

You said 'school'.Doha College is good as is DESS;I hope to god it isn't 'Arizona' or 'Berlitz'.By the way, you'll be able to pick up extra hours by teaching at the British Council-they've got a good hourly rate.As for xtian 001...try and get a place near the corniche. There are some apartment blocks with seaviews and many of them have contact numbers postedpainted on their sides somewhere.A good area ie compound will cost you an arm, testicle and leg. |
