I'm already certified to teach but if they make me do a 5 day course and it's reasonably affordable and near my home, I'd consider doing it all over again. My question is, has anyone ever gotten work through them, how reputable are they, what kinds of schools will they place you in, how is the standard of living (in general, I know it varies from country to country), etc, you know, all the big questions one could have about a company like this. I would love to be able to work in South America or Europe (not holding much hope for that one, though, as I'm from the U.S. and don't want to create any controversies on the message boards). I'm assuming, also that the "up to $1000 a week" salary is either for asia or the middle east, which is okay, I'll deal with a lower salary, heck I don't even make that over in the States. So if anyone can help me out, or, if this is not the way to go, recommend another program or company that will be able to get some jobs lined up for me before I leave the country, I'd really appreciate it. I've also been looking into Footsteps, Footprints, I'm blanking on the name but you know what I mean, so if you have any recommendations for them as well, do let me know. I can't wait to get out of the U.S. |

Marisol,
I would really love to know where teaching jobs are for high school graduates that pay $1000 a week or $4000 a month. They certainly arent in japan which pays some of the highest salaries in Asia. An entry level teacher starting with a BA will make between 220,000 and 250,000 yen a month which is about $2500 a month. I work full time, have a Masters degree and clear about $4000 a month. JET teachers here hired by the Japanese government and have a minimum of a BA degree make about $3000 a month gross salary.
Salaries in China for qualified teachers are about $500 a month in local currency. Return airfares are paid for in Korea and in China I believe after a certain length of service, but not in Japan.
Many countries here are not available to you in Asia unless you have a university degree as its needed for the work visa and you can get a job without a TEFL certificate. You can forget about making $1000 a week on an entry level teaching job, its not going to happen. thats about a $50,000 a year income.
PS there were some comments made about Global TESOL on this forum, that its only a 5-day course, there is no teaching practicum and the course is not really recognised anywhere as it is done online with no teaching supervision. You pay your money and you get your diploma. What is a diploma worth if you dont actually step foot in in a classroom before you graduate the course? |

Thanks Doglover, I really wanted to hold out some hope for GlobalTESOL solely because of job placement but if it's not worth it, it's just not worth it. Is there anyone, then, that has had a good experience with a reputable recruiting service??? I'd really love to move abroad soon but am a bit hesitant in moving without any solid prospects, maybe one of you can give me that push |

Maybe the question should be, "Of those who are already out there, who used a recruiting service?"
I think you'll find that by scanning the job listings, and applying directly to schools that interest you, you'll have better luck.
Most recruitment services are in it for the cash, and often make questionable claims. But remember, up to $1000 a week only states a maximum. The minimum could be anything....
Regards,
Justin |
