I am wondering if anyone could recommend some good places to live that have close access to mtn. sports. I wouldn't mind being near a large city, but moving away from Chicago...I kind of want to avoid that.

I realize I could look at a map and see where the mtns are (and I have), but this doesn't tell me much in terms of good places to live and work (AEON)

anything will help. thanks!

Yeah. Sapporo sounds like a great spot. Nagano and Niigata are also good. I would also suggest the Tohoku area. Gunma, Fukushima and Yamagata prefectures come to mind.

So many places...so little time.

I would highly reccommend Matsumoto. It is a small city but it has a great atmosphere and is of course right in the middle of the mountains. Nagano city seems a good balance too and 2x as big but I have not lived near there.

I'm with Kitano. Matsumoto is awesome. Love it there. Great city, lots to do, and minutes from everything, from the inaka life to city life.
Other than that, I say norhtern yamanashi, personal fav of mine. Try the masutomi onsen after climbing mizugaki yama!

Matsumoto is much more beautiful as a city than Nagano, but I do prefer Nagano because it has access to more ski hills. Matsumoto is close to the big guns (Hakuba mainly) and you'll never tire of that area, but Nagano city is closer to Niigata and has a lot more varity for snowboarding/skiing in my opinion. Thats not to detract from Matsumoto, though, the nightlife and restaurants are nicer, and as I said, the city itself is stunning.

I live in Nagano, while my friend lives in Matsumoto, and she always came up here to go snowboarding. Unless you have a car though it'll take you an hour or so to get up into the moutains from either city, but here there is a free shuttle bus to Hakuba, which is pretty cool and a favourite amongst my friends.

Matsumoto never really blew me away with nightlife when I was there, but Nagano is pretty quiet too unless you make a few friends. After a while you get used to it, and once you make a few friends its pretty easy to have a good time.
