The question of recognition of online degrees has come up in several threads and there are 2 important answers:

1. Degrees from accredited universities will be recognised, whether they're taken online or in residence.

2. The degree is only one part of getting a job. We (Zayed University, UAE) have recently appointed a candidate with an online MA from USQ. But the degree was just a minimum requirement. Her experience, the comments she made in her application and, especially, her interview were what got her the job. A candidate who had a regular classroom MA but did not have appropriate experience or did not interview well would have been rejected.

So, yes, it is important to get your degree from an accredited university - and judge that by official sources, not comments from individuals - but don't think that's the whole story when it comes to getting a job.

This is the heart of the matter, isn't it. Whingers like RPD can just keep on whinging but facts are facts.

I met a guy similar to RPD once claiming that the University of Hawaii ESL program was a farce because its professors "were just a buch of cane-whackers" whose first language was pidgin.
He obviously had a beef that was racially motivated, as does RPD.

Thanks. I am just worried that after sinking 2 years and a tidy sum into it, I won't be able to use an M.A. obtained via distance. Onto my next question: Is there a significant difference between a SIT TESOL Cert and a CELTA? They both cost two grand and take 120 hours and I have heard good things about SIT. Thoughts?

Looking quickly at the SIT TESOL site, it doesn't seem a bad course. Could even be really good. Only thing is I've never heard of it before! This might show ignorance on my part, or might be a reflection that however good it is, when you apply for jobs with it, the recruiter's going to read it on a CV and think, "Eh, what?"

See, that's my problem. Everyone who took it praised it to the skies, but seems no one knows about it.

SIT is a well known university for their masters program and it should be good for 40K US. Can't comment on their TESOL program, but I'm sure it would be good. That said, the CELTA is better known around the world because it is taught everywhere and the sites are externally moderated.

Regarding RPD then as it's been said:

By the way, YoungGeorge, you're completly correct and I couldn't agree with you more!

Well,

I have my views on Australian M.A. degrees.

I also have my opinion about USQ, which don't jive with what some here believe - right or wrong, that's my opinion.

no big thing - Such is life.
