Chances are, you won't like what I have to say too much.... I think your desires are borderline contradictory...
If you want to be close to nature and away from huge cities, that's fine... But you can pretty much forget any kind of party scene. I mean, every city has a local scene but if you're expecting Roppongi... Forget it. I live in a city of about 200,000. I'm virtually 30 minutes away from tons of mountains, trails, hiking paths, etc.. etc... in the Japanese alps. The city goes to sleep at 9pm except for a few places -- definitely no party. There IS the local dance club.... but it's small and some really sketchy people tend to hang out there -- and no foreigners, really. It's good if you want to score some 'E' or white candy but that's exactly why I don't go.... (see the discussion thread on drugs in Japan).
On the other hand, I've partied in Tokyo until late -- but you've got your five lanes of traffic.
I wish I could have the best of both worlds too, but I've settled for the quiet, nature-like Japan, with the option of taking a 1.5hr train ride into Tokyo if I want to paint the town red.
In the end, to a large degree it's going to depend on WHERE you end up getting a job. The city I'm in wouldn't have been my first choice, but after two years, I'm glad I'm here and I wouldn't want to move elsewhere.
Anyway, if you are into the nature stuff, any of the prefectures which share Mt. Fuji have some nice areas where to live, including many resort towns... And anywhere near the alps is nice.... Nagano, Niigata, Yamanashi, Toyama, etc... |
