| Does anyone know anything about Keelung. How far is it from Taipei? Is the pupblic transit there good? Do they have a train system? How long would a commute to Taipei be? |

| It's an MRT stop. It's around half an hour from Taipei central from memory. The walk up the hill is nice. |

The Taipei MRT has been expanding the MRT system but not that much.
Keelung is one of the oldest cities on Taiwan. It has the typical Chinese city design (none at all). Very narrow streets with few to no sidewalks. Keelung has one of the highest injury rates for pedestrian/vehicle accidents.
Keelung has no MRT system and the bus system hasn't been improved for 50 years.
Keelung has a very good port but that fact is totally lost on the locals as no ferry's or any other type of public marine transport exist.
Travel by train to and from Taipei is between 45 minutes to one hour each way.
On the more positive side Keelung has some very good historical sites if you can get to them and is very close to Fulong and Da Shi (Honey Moon Bay) beaches two of the best beach resorts on the North East coast before they built the nuclear power plant there.
The weather in Keelung is chilly and wet in the winter to hot and wet in the summer.

| Well, it's definitely within walking distance of an MRT stop for me maybe not for everyone though. It has been awhile since I've been there. |

Matchstick man,
Is it possible you are confusing Keelung with Damsui? The latter being on the MRT.
Another question about Keelung....... I heard there were some kind of rock formations around there somewhere. Can anybody shed some light on this? |

It is possible that I have confused it with Danshui. Aristotle was correct and provided good information for the original poster in this case. It should be noted that Aristotle didn't 'pimp' his site for a change either.

Well that clears that up. There is no MRT in Keelung.
Most people would take the bus or train if travelling to Keelung without their own transportation.
In answer to initial post, I think that Keelung wouldn't be a bad place to live. |

Given a choice between the two, I would definitely agree that Danshui would be the best choice.
The choice as to whether Keelung should be considered as a stand alone option - I would say yes, provided that you are willing to leave in a place that is somewhat quieter (in a people sense) and less convenient than Taipei.
Tamshui, though, has a lot going for it! |
