In regards to the major cities of Kaohsiung, Taipei and Tainan what are the major differences in a) Job availability b) Climate c) General livability. Certainly its a bit different for everyone but where were you most happy and why? Anything in particular one should consider when choosing a city?
Thanks everyone! Cool

Hey Florida,
I've only lived in Taipei so I can't really give you any kind of scoop on the others. In brief, here are my answers regarding Taipei:

Job Availability - There are many schools and many jobs here. However, there are also many foreigners now so don't expect to get a job right away.

Climate - It rains more than I like. In the winter it was damp and rainy. Now that its summer, I don't mind the humidity but can't take the rain ruining my plans every weekend. When the sun does come out and stay out it is gloriously, baking hot and the beach isn't far away.

General Livibility - I guess that depends on what you consider to be liveable. There's a lot of air polution and the traffic is insane. However, on the up-side there is lots of "Western-friendly" food and entertainment if you want these. There are art galleries and movies and shopping and clubs. There are tons of interesting daytrips in near proximity. In short, ther's plenty to keep you busy.

hey Florida...

i'm originally from Taiwan & even though i've only stayed in Northern Taiwan, i can offer you some insight. Taiwan is not big, but Taipei is definitely going to be more metropolitan than Tainan (Kaoshiung from what i hear is catching up to the capital). Taipei is bustling & yes, there are lots to do, but prices are higher (food, services, etc.) & it is very crowded. Tainan will be a little less metropolitan & you might have the chance to experience some more of the "local" culture & people of Taiwan. it is hot & humid throughout Taiwan during the summer & there are mosquitoes. it is also typhoon season during the summer. the winters can be cold & wet. it's the humidity that's hard to get used to (especially if you have allergies). in my opinion, the climate is only "pleasant" during late Fall & early Spring. i've heard that Taidong or much of the Eastern part of Taiwan is more rural & more beautiful to live in. it might be because there is less development. Job opportunities in Taidong might be opening up too but it is not hard to get a job teaching English anywhere throughout Taiwan, depending on exactly what you're up for. Hope this helps...
