I see on the TV places like Prague and Bratislava are now even getting popular for stag parties. All those Weekenders have got to drive up prices. But where I am, you can live quite happily on the wages. If you drink in expat bars frequented by Scandewegian businessmen you'll be paying 1.50 for a beer. If you go to a local's bar, which at least here aren't dangerous, you'll pay 65p. Must be like that in Turkey as well surely? I saved a bit each month, the teacher I replaced used to live the full expat lifestyle and once had to crawl out the toilet window to escape a nightclub where he'd been ordering champagne all night. Should add that of all the people I've worked with who taught in other countries in the region - Czech, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Estonia - most had been in cities I'd never heard of. Might be significant.

I never had to share a flat, but you'd expect it to be pretty small and basic, maybe where the living room and bedroom are the same thing - you just fold out the sofa. But the only real problem with it's likely to be the neighbours cranking up Russian Techno at 4am.

One thing is for certain. No way of keeping a wife and kid. I don't work here any more. Have a place, but go away to work in countries where I can make enough to keep them. Eastern Europe's good for singles but forget it if you've got dependants.
