On of my colleagues is needing the UNION information as he would like to join. I had it somewhere but haven't been able to find it. Thank you. |

Where is he located? What does he teach? (eg. eikaiwa, junior high school, etc)...
There are several unions -- would be best to direct him to the appropriate one. |

Which one are you talking about , the General Union is in Osaka and the National Union of General Workers is in Tokyo.
The GU is moving house this week and the phone lines to their offices will be down for the next couple of days

Thanks for the information.
He and I are teaching at (an all-girl) private jr/sr high in the Tokyo area. He lives in Tokyo too. He has been teaching at the same school, now going on 4 years. I started this past April. He knew nothing of the UNION and is very interested in joining.

In that case, the General Union may not be the best bet, but the NUGW (GU's sister union). As well, have your friend find out (discreetly ask) his Japanese co-workers what union they are part of... May be best to join the same union as them...
Good luck in either case though. |

FWIW
The GU and NGUW are registered and recognised as accredited Japanese trade unions in Japan with the authority to negotiate with employers. They have native Japanese-speaker officials who can negotiate with employers if one does not speak Japanese.
Most high schools and universities will have an in-house company union, but my experience has been that such in-house company unions have been worse than useless in looking after ones interests in the event of a dispute. A union representation is required in many companies (or a company can not refuse to have union representation on-site) but my guess is that either the NUGW or the GU is your best bet if you are a foreigner. As you mentioned in the other thread, location may be a decisive factor if you are living in a provincial or isolated area. The Education Workers union is also another one you can consider. |

EWU is Osaka-based, however.... I don't think they'd be too keen on rolling out the "sound truck" for a strike near Tokyo... 
It's unfortunate that location IS such a deciding factor....  |
