Hello everyone! I'm looking for some advice here, and this looks like the place for it!

I have 3 years of experience teaching adults, however it was in a technical environment. I was a computer software trainer and I recieved minimal training as a teacher. It was a learn as you go experience for me. I was hired for technical support and it was later determined by my employer that I would be perfect for training. It turns out I was good at it, and I enjoyed it. I would love to explore the option of teaching english in Mexico.

Is it realistic of me to expect to be able to find a part-time job with my lack of experience and education? (I am a Civil Engineering Technician by trade, only certified, no degree.) I'd prefer to not have to get TEFL certification, but I will if it's deemed necessary. I'm not greatly concerned about my wages as I have the money situation covered for the next couple of years. Teaching seems like a great way to experience the culture, and to be able to stay in the country for longer than 6 months at a time.

I am looking specifically at the Puerto Vallarta or Mazatlan areas. I need to be near the ocean!

Cheers,
Erin

As I once read, "There's a seat for every arse." Yes, you could find a TEFL job with your current skills, but with no degree and no certificate, you will be limited to entry-level positions at private language schools. The higher your level of certification and education, the better the positions that will be open to you.

I would strongly recommend a TEFL certificate. It will only cost you $1000 or so for a generic 4-week course, and it will open a lot of doors.

"There's a seat for every arse."

I love that!

The main thing that matters to me is that I CAN get a job with my current skills. I'm pretty certain I'll take the TEFL certificate course, if only to make some contacts/friends down there.
