As far as I know, most milk in Japan is produced by cows that are imprisoned in cages so small that they can't move. Unless you don't have any moral issues with this form of animal cruelty, I'd suggest not buying milk at all.
The alternative is soy milk, some (not all) of which is much tastier than the varieties I've tried in other countries. |

Ndorfin: No offence, but... YUCK!
Besides, milk is good for you.... I drink it every day, as it's part of the regular public school system's lunch program.
I for one have not had an issue with the taste of milk in Japan... However I do agree that 3.6% is a bit too fat to my liking. I used to buy 1% back home... I can find "Fat Free" milk... I dunno if that's supposed to be the Japanese version of "Skim milk" but I buy that whenever I can... |

Have you seen what they do to soys? They beat them over a stick and threaten to make tofu out of them if they get out of line. |

I was very free and feeling a bit bored at my junior high school today, so I decided to pass some of the time by hunting down a link to Morinaga's 'Oishii' brand (tried it again recently, and it was much better than I remembered - the name says it all! ):

Pretty good graphics for a website about milk. |

most milk in japan is sterilized, somewhere on the carton it will say something like 130 deg C for 2 sec. non sterilized (pasturised) is more expensive and will say something like 65 deg C for 30 mins. you will have to hunt for it but most supermarkets stock some and it tastes MUCH better!! |
