I flew from Ist to London and a colleague of mine and I who happened to be from the same part of the country drove in a tiny hire car -the cheapest of course from Kent/Sussex to Edinburgh. We had booked a b&b but hadn`t realised that Edinburgh is such a spread out city. There must be a better way of say that but you know what I mean. The b&b was fantastic and had 3 choices of breakfast-English, Continental and they had a Scottish one-kind of oatcakes and is it stogies? I am sure it is just for the tourists but the conference coincided with civil service exam so it was busy. The conference was great and everyone was there- I spoke to Jane Wills, Rod Bolitho and learned that ''there is no such thing as failure, just success at a later date.'' Bet none of you can tell me which famous tefler said that.

Unfortunately I didn`t really see anything of Edinburgh, it was the drive to Herriott Watt and back, a long conference and a quick trip to the centre for shopping, oh and Asda for some stuff to take back.

When did they have the IATEFL conference in Scotland? I don't remember that. I've been a few times and I don't recall ever having been to Scotland. I've just submitted a proposal for next year's conference in Harrogate (did I spell that right?). Anyone here from Yorkshire? Give me details of what to expect!

It was in April 1999 in Edinburgh. I passed through Harrogate on the way back and it is a very upmarket ex market town turned upper middle class yuppie place. House prices? Forget it. I am curious as to where they can find a place big enough for IATEFL.

As to what to expect-I have been to a few conferences including TESOL Arabia in Dubai and they are great but as there is so much choice you spend your time half listening to the speaker and flicking through the program to decide where you are going next. The one piece of advice I have is you have to assume that when you are doing your workshop/paper/poster display there are going to be people who leave early and worse people who are late. In fact at least half will either arrive late or leave early.

No.

A TEFL conference is organised with almost military precision-it has to be. People have paid a lot of money to be there or for the lucky few their employers have. There are always evening events and you never have a conflict between going to the pub and going to one of the sessions.(I hate that word but cannot think of another)

I went to Bilkent about 8 years ago. It was well organised(I am comparing it with TESOL Arabia) The Fast actually paid for it.
