Don't take this too seriously, and this is obviously a big generalisation, but...
...so far, I'm not impressed with the Taipei girls. It seems like there are two types. The kind that only want to date foreigners, and the kind that won't. The former seem to think that westerners live some kind of Friends-style, zany, laugh-a-minute lifestyle, and that all the white guys embody everything a Taiwanese guy is not. I hate to say it, but generally speaking, this kind of girl is not at the top of the league in the looks department. And she's probably been around the block more times than that garbage truck.
So what I saying is...are there any girls who will like me for who I am, not the colour of my skin and passport...let's hope so. And if anybody knows where they are all hiding, PM me  |

Hay guys I moved to a foreign country and now I hate it that people think of me as a foreigner!!!1 Also, I moved to a foreign country with pretty foregin girls because I like pretty foreign girls BUT HOW DARE THEY LIKE ME BECAUSE I'M FOREIGN TOO!?

I do agree with the Incredible Ape. It seems that outside of my work environment, almost every Taiwanese girl that I know has dated an endless stream of foreigner guys. It seems that they are disinterested in the local men for whatever reason. They also do seem to resemble the proverbial bike, or garbage truck.
Similarities can also be drawn from a lot of the foreigner men here. They only go for local girls. They are always out trying to pick up a different girl every week. And usually, this kind of guy is not at the top of the league in the looks department. But not every foreigner guy is like that of course.
The first thing anyone looks for in an ideal mate is a level of physical attraction. It's only natural. Skin color can be a big factor in physical attraction. In a lot of the Taiwanese girls you meet here, the color of your skin will be an important initial attraction. So my answer to you is 'no'. And my question to you is 'Do you mean local girls in particular or all girls of any skin color residing in Taipei?' |

This is a nice contradiction. Incredible ape wants to date someone who does not care what his skin color is while he only considers dating Taiwanese girls. When is the last time you gave any white women in Taipei a look?

I first want to say that it is dangerous to sterotype guys and girls. It is probably true that most men and women that party hard and chase a different member of the opposite sex every week cannot change but there are definitly people that can chase a lot of members of the opposite sex while they are single but can be happy settling down with one guy or girl.

I had a similar experience. I dated a Korean girl in the U.S. She was 24 and had only ever kissed two guys before I met her. I doubt that she would ever talk to a guy in the bar that she did not know. The only reason I got to know her is that I went to church with my ex-girlfriend and met her there. So then she felt comfortable around me. Later my ex-girlfriend and I broke up and I asked the Korean girl out. We dated until she returned to Korea. She liked to go out on weekends and drink but if you went to the bar alone you would never meet her. She told me that she met her two ex-boyfriend through friends and relatives. I imagine that she will marry her next boyfriend. |

Look, man, if you can't find a nice girl here you're either not saying hello to any of them, or you haven't dealt with women very much in your past, or you have a huge physical deformity.

Both Sheep and Jason hit the nail on the head.
If I were single, I WOULD NOT find a girlfriend in any of the ex-pat bars where there are a lot of foreign men - the girls in there have been used as punching boards. Total head cases. It doesn't matter if it's Taiwan, Japan, Korea or Thailand, that's the way it is.
As a footnote to Seeburn's post - learn the language. Once you do that, you really expand your possibilities.
But if you get hooked up with a local girl you meet in an ex-pat bar, you're looking for a ton of grief - that's only my opinon, mind you. |
