Hi, Im sure that you guys have answered this question a million times but how is the job status there. I will soon have a TESOL Certificate and was wondering how my chances of getting a job will be. I have no experience and will just have a high school education.

What can i expect to make a month and how much do you need to live comfertably?

How much money should i bring to get started at first?

Thanks if you can answer my questions. Thanks

Your chances are poor. This is a very competitive market.

Again, another dismal reply.

You can get a job in Mexico with TESOL, but not having a college degree or any experience will leave you working at places like Harmon Hall or Ingles Individual. These places pay 50 pesos an hour, which you can live on (barely) if you work 35 or 40 hours a week.

You can also work additional hours giving private lessons. You can live in most places on 6000 to 8000 pesos a month, but to live comfortably you will need more.

I met a lot of people who just got their certificate and found a job. ITTO gives courses for teaching english as an foreign language and their students almost always find a job.

We have a school for english and spanish and we hire our teachers on their quality and not on their certificates.

I think that the average time to find a job is about a month. Depends of course where you are searching and how hard you are searching but all the people that i met and where searching in Guadalajara found one within a month.

Most of them started with 2 or 3 hours a day. You more or less need around 5 hours a day to earn enough to live. This of course also depends on the salary.

As for finding a job, I think a lot depends on location and what types of teaching jobs / schools you're willing to consider. In all honesty, in most places your education/training and lack of teaching experience put you near the bottom of the barrel among the competition.

How much you can expect to make a month also depends on location and type of school. In the city where I am, TEFL jobs can pay anywhere between 20 and 180 pesos per hour with something in the range of 40-60 pesos per hour after taxes probably being about average. In my opinion (again in this city,) anything less than 50 pesos per hour isn't worth it. Even at 50 pesos per hour, you'd have to work quite a few hours to come close to living halfway comfortably on your teaching wages alone.

Personally, I wouldn't venture into this country looking for a TEFL job without having about USD$2,000 in reserve + return airfare (just in case.) That amount should keep you going until you find a job (if you find one that's acceptable to you) and cover your settling-in and other initial expenses. Then if you find a job that provides you take-home pay of 50 pesos per hour, can get at least 30 hours of teaching per week, have no big emergencies, have decent luck finding an apartment that you can afford to rent, and live quite conservatively, you can break even after teaching here for about a year.

As I said, keep in mind that all of these things vary depending on where in Mexico you are.

"There's a seat for every arse..."
You'll be able to find _something_, but with no experience and no university degree, it won't be much.

At the most, you'll be lucky to find a job working full-time that pays a few thousand pesos. To rent an apartment might take roughly one-third of your wages. Add in meals, entertainment, and travel, and you'll be living a VERY modest existence.

I would recommend you come to Mexico with at least $2000 US and a return ticket home.
