I know Yakup has been the focus of new threads for over two years but I think this ad really cuts the cake:
Country: China
City: Beijing
Advertisement: We urgently need Native english teachers, no qualifications,no high education backgroud is needed. If you are a native English speaker and interested in this job, Contact us, you will find our offer is vey attractive and lucrative for you. Mary Zhang Language Training Center, Yakup International Co.Ltd. TEL: 86-10-64703461, 84726541, 13910325410 Email:[email protected]
Good grief! If I didn't know about the tightening of regulations I would have fallen for this ad easily!
By the way I looked up a couple Yakup recruiters' family name and guess what I found? Fillipino name! |

I don't see what your beef might be except that you seem to have a huge chip on your shoulder - against Filippinos?
I do not recommend Yakup but they are an established business. If they can place foreign nationals LEGALLY then by all means, what's there to wail about?
Qualifications, certs? You make me laugh! Do you attach as much importance to these pieces of paper as the Chinese do??? Ridiculous.
Of course, I am in favour of applicants having a relevant teaching background - if you are considered for the position of a TEACHER.
Unfortunately, the majority of us do not get hired in their cpacity as TEACHERS.
They are emcees, talkheads, so-called "oral teachers".
That's a far, far cry from teaching English.
And for this purpose I don't see the need of having any special training!
Filippinos do extremely well on this and even in teaching English. |

No Roger, I think it was you who mentioned that Yaku was a Turkish name, so I just thought it'd be interesting and see where the recruiters came from. Nope, I know of many Fillipinos here and we get along fine. It was just some comment, nothing major about it.

Now Roger, you know how much I value, appreciate, and agree with most of your postings. But you and I both know that in China, a person's ability to teach is hardly ever considered by potential employers, right? So when an agent openly implies that anyone who is a native speaker can teach English, isn't that suggesting that John Smith from across the street who dropped out of school after grade 7 can work in China as a EFL teacher? Can you imagine what would happen when Mr. Smith tries to get his FEC? |

Glad to see we do not in fact disagree on anything at all; nevertheless I took exception to your singling out Filippinos for, your post hinted that - masquerading as "native English" teachers.
While they may not be "natives", I feel all the John SMiths combined who know no other lingo but English make no better teachers than anyone else for whom English is their second tongue.
But I take your piece of information about Yakup being a Filippino-owned company with a great deal of personal interewst. And I would not recommend anyone to get hired by them. Not because of ownership questions but because they are unscrupulous agents for whom peddling FTs is but a sideline to their more regular commercial activities. |

Well for what it's worth I have see Chinese names coming up as contacts. But I do have to say, as foreigners themselves in China, how do these recruiters sleep at night?
BTW I didn't say that Yakup is Filippino owned, just that quite a few recruiters' name I have seen are of that nationality. Likewise, I wasn't implying that they were masquerading as native speakers. |

The guy is actually Turkish. I walked in on their office BJ once by mistake. The security guard sent me to the wrong place. I was looking for a Chinese school.
Anyway I knew immediately that I was at the wrong place. They said I should wait and someone would pick me up for a school about 10 kms away!
Umm, no, stupid. I came to this area because I work here and it's convienient!
Anyway this guy swans out of his office beaming with a smile like a cat and asks me questions.
He then starts talking about a school that office great accommodation, intensive teaching and really cheap, about $1,500US a semester. Not including accommodation.
Well, , loosers you really only care about the $$$ don't you.
I couldn't get out of there quickly enough.
Anyway I found the chinese school. 500 Yuan a month for 1 1/2 hours class a day. |

What else do you recall seeing in that office? Did you see a lot of foreigners there? |
