Hi all. I can't seem to register for the Korean-only board, so I thought I'd post my question here.

My wife and I are Canadians looking to teach ESL somewhere. We've been presented with a school offering the following, and I'd like anyone's opinions on how good a deal it is. I plan on tracking down contact info for the other foreign teachers already there, but I wanted to know if anyone had any insight into the town itself, or the sounds of the contract in general. Thanks!

The info (copied from the e-mail I received):
Starting date: First of Sep.
Name of the School: YMCA
Location : Iksan City
Job title : ESL Teacher.
Type of Students : age 8-university students.
Number of current foreigner teacher: 4
Payment : 2.0 million won per month for max 30 hours a week.
and you will get paid one month salary more as bonus at the end of contract period. the contract is for one year and it canbe renewed.
Overtime Pay: 18,000 won/ hour.
Type of Housing: Furnished Couple apt for the coupel teacher.
Distance from housing to school : 10 min walking distance.
Working time a day : Maximum 30 hours a week.
( Between 3:00-9:00 pm )
Working days a week : Mon to Fri
Airfare : Round ticket will be provided to you .
Holiday: 16-17 national holidays
Paid Vacation : 10 days
Health insurance : Medical and dental insurance will be provided 50% by the school. It's about 24 US$ per month.

1. you have to register seperatly for the korean forums. no idea why you can't. Send Dave an email.

2. Some questions you might want to ask the employer:

A. Is the 30 hours a week TOTAL (i.e. including prep time, office hours, extra tuition, meetings & etc.) or JUST contact (in-the-classroom) hours? If it is contact hours, how long is an hour? (Don't laugh. Some schools have "teaching hours" which are 40 minutes, so you actually have 33% more work than you thought).

B. If the maximum is 30 hours a week, why the overtime pay? Is overtime mandatory or optional?

C. What does the insurance cover? If you get hit by a bus, will they fly you back to your home country? I've been in places where the insurance was skimpy to say the best. Ask.

Due to the hours being 3-9:00pm your actual hours will be a maximum of 6 * 45(or 50) minute lessons. That's standard but nice. No Kindy, no split shift.
Pay is average, overtime rate is standard.
Vacation, 10 days is actually good for a Hagwon but ask if you're allowed to choose the days.

Sounds good on paper.
Ask about the vacation though.
