I believe she was asking for advice from more experienced folks.

And I believe I am certainly included in the set of more experienced folks.

In about 50% of the jobs I have had here, I worked side by side with folks in their early 20s--some of whom also saved about half their salaries (the ones that didn't drink them up.)

What more do you want? My CV posted, with dates and salary figures?

Oh, moonraven, don't take it so personally. Yes, denises asked for advice from the experienced people here, and you fall into that category hands down.

What I took issue with was that denises is only 24 and just starting out, with a long-range outlook, but you only offered the fact that after 15 years of teaching, you have been able to save what you did, yet you did not explain what it took to do that, nor what sort of jobs you held in doing that. To me, that was the most valuable advice. To exclude that meant denises had little background to go on, and she could not expect to just leap into the field and do what you did right away. No offense, just a lot of missing data.

Oh, and if you want to get snide about it...

...hey, why not present that to her? (Not the whole CV, of course.) It'd at least show the path you took to get where you did. Right now, all she has is your word that it was not hard to do if one does not drink away one's earnings, but she knows zilch about what you do now or how you got to that point. That, to me, is what she really needs.

Sorry, Glenski. She hasn't asked me for my CV. Probably she knows that would be an invasion of privacy?

I fear some people are born to grow old and be snide, Glenski...

While some are just RUDE, routinely make foolish comments and are prejudiced against their elders (and possibly their betters?)

Oh, no. Did someone go and rattle Moonraven's cage again?

For someone who claims that "language is for communication" (a quite shocking and laughable example of teleological postulating) Moonraven certainly does not do much of it. Mind you, referring to oneself in the third person and prefixing it with a definite article tends to have that effect on people, doesn't it?

You are CHOOSING to rattle my cage. Incidentally, Ravens are not tame birds--we do not live in cages. Nor are we well disposed to suffering fools gladly.

Too bad you have had nothing to contribute to the forum. But then, I don't recall that you ever have had.

Too much time on your hands?

If language did not have as its end communication, it would not exist. Get with the program.

This is another example of a clear non sequitur. It also displays a frightening level of teleology and an embarrassing (and undergraduate-like) knowledge of current linguistic theory, especially in the area of pragmatics, and particularly speech act theory.

For all the successes you claim to have had in your seminal life, you certainly do not appear to be at ease with yourself. (I guess making mention of your life will expose me to a charge of ageism.)

Shall we take it that the thought of jetting off to the Dead Sea does not exactly relax you?

You are just like Edgar Allan Poe's raven (the "ungainly fowl"), you have but one message, and that is at best cryptic and at worst garbled and incoherent.

As for your appeal to contributing to the thread, perhaps you could explain how informing someone of the percentage of your salary you claim to have saved over the last few decades contributes to the topic.

Entirely possible to get 2 months off a year, or more.

Get a secondary school position by day and teach conversation in the evenings. When school is out, get someone to cover your evening classes.

Good luck to you!

Zero:

Sorry to hear that you are so envious of me. Envy just makes one bitter and sad--and prematurely dried-up. You can put your dictionary away. It will not give you the PhD you need to have.

I don't have to JET off to the Dead Sea--it is 40 minutes away.

This seems to keep coming up in my discussions with teachers. We all love what we do but really need time out for ourselves. It's very difficult to keep going for 11 months year in year out. The main problem of course is if we take time out, it's usually unpaid. Other than that, we end up in a place just for the money. Neither are ideal. My own experience has been just that. So, I've spent time thinking outside the box and I've realised that as teachers we have skills in demand in other areas than strictly teaching. I'm working on developing a site for teachers who want to stay in teaching but who really need to boost income if TEFL is to be an affordable, pleasant, long term option. I know so many great teachers who have been lost to TEFL because they simply couldn't afford to stay in it and meet long term commitments.
Anyone interested, please visit my 'Summer Jobs..' posting and take the poll. I really want to pursue this idea but only if the interest is really out there.
