I worked for Nova for my first six months in Japan, and then got a jr. high gig through a dispatch company. With that experience under my belt, I now have a nice job working for a school board. I recommend to all my friends to get a a job with Nova first, because they will help you get to Japan and get set up. Then you can take your time and look for a better job (because most companies only hire you if you're already here).

One company I can recommend, I.E.S. (International Education Services). They supply teachers for all sorts of situations, including junior high schools. I needed a two month gig to tide me over before my current job, and they were great. They have offices in Osaka and Tokyo, and the people in the Osaka branch were professional, friendly and honest.

Rai, I.E.S. has removed the AET page from their site, but they were operating the same kind of illegal dispatch service that the other companies under discussion are doing. Not very professional, friendly or honest in my books. They were cheating you, whether you knew about it or not.

There's a remnant of it left under customized services:

(Point 2) foreign staff employment outsourcing service

Whether that still includes illegal AET dispatch, I'm not sure, but there's nothing on their site to suggest that they now are doing legal dispatch. Give them a call if you want to check.

Here's the Google cache of their old AET page:

So it seems like most dispatch companies in Japan are operating illegally Rolling Eyes
That doesn't really help teachers who are looking for a reputable company that they can trust.
I'm actually wondering if it would be better to teach in a Public school in Korea rather than Japan.
Does anyone have experience of teaching in a Public school in both of these countries? I'd be interested in hearing a comparison between the two.

Talking about dipatch companies, I recently applied to both Interac and LSJ. I hope I get in, but none have sent me any reply yet. How long will it take before I get an answer usually?

It's not only the dispatch companies that are disreputable, it's also the BOEs. It takes two to tango. It's quite possible that majority of them will be forced into doing everything legally by next year with a few holdouts.

I'd suggest going to the Korean forums asking about EPIK.

Yeah I've been considering teaching in a Public school through the EPIK/GEPIK programs in Korea but they have their fair share of problems and complaints from teachers too. At least it seems like teachers always get paid on time and don't have to worry about any of this 'attendance bonus' rubbish.
Though I'm more attracted and fascinated with Japan. So I guess it's a trade off. Which would I prefer? Food for thought.

quote="hip-hop boy78"]On a seperate note, can anyone tell me anything either positive or negative about ALTIA CENTRAL?Thanks again! Very Happy[/quote]

Their website claims that they have outsourcing contracts with 52 Board of Education. Outsourcing teachers is illegal. Altia Central is just another sleazy illegal dispatch company.

http://www.altia-jp.com/jap/framecategory/enkaku.html

They claim to have a dispatch licence. If in fact they do have one, why are they risking losing it for five years by continuing to do illegal dispatch?
