Hi all, first post, have a few questions.
I am currently on the JET Program in Japan but am taking paid leave to do the August 1-26 CELTA at ECC. Anybody else going to be there?
1. Anyways, I would like to get a serviced apartment for the month, and was wondering if anyone knows anywhere decent in the Siam Square area. I've tentatively booked with Cape House but I'm wondering what other options might be out there.
2. I'm going with my girlfriend, and she knows that the CELTA will take up most of my time, and she's cool with that, but I'd like her to have something to do while I'm at class all day. Anyone out there know of any cool courses or anything like that in Bangkok?
Thanks! |
Ok, didn't want to make a new thread, but my options for a place to stay have been narrowed down to A-One or Reno. Screw the apartment business.
Anyone have experience with either of these hotels? I think the pool at Reno might be the deciding factor, but then again, I've never seen either place!
help!

There's a fair selection of guesthouses that'll rent you a room with a bed, desk, shower and aircon opposite and a bit to the east of MBK, in the first soi you can turn down if you get off at National Stadium BTS on the south side of the street and walk away from the big intersection that is the cornerstone of Siam Square. 13,000B a month, about. One BTS stop or walking distance -- but you'll be pretty sweaty by the time you get to the ECC branch if you walk that far in August.
You shouln't have to book in advance. Most of the services at a serviced apartment that you might be interested in (laundry?) can be duplicated for you by any guesthouse quite easily. I'd go the guesthouse route for this reason.
Oh, and a lot of the guesthouses on this soi that I'm talking about have Japanese up in the windows, so you'll feel right at home.
You're bringing your girlfriend to Thailand? Ok, up to you. There's oodles of courses and stuff for her to do during the day. Buy a Lonely Planet for listings, or look around any of the big tourist areas. If she tries to take a course at Khao San transport will be pretty inconvenient, though. I know Blue Elephant restraunt (BTS Surasak) has cooking classes, and there are lots of "Learn Thai" or "Learn Japanese" schools around, too.
Also, with a year of experience from JET (or longer?) the CELTA won't tax you like it will the newbies. You'll have free time. |

Cheers! Thanks for the detailed reply!
Actually, my gf wants a nice place with a pool, so... All the guesthouses I've found in the Siam Square area that are cheap don't have pools, and the hotels with pools are either too expensive or too far away. Does the Cape House place look like a bit of a hike? I'm having a bit of trouble judging distances from the maps I've been looking at. I guess about 15 minutes would be fine with me, although I might regret that depending on how hot it is.
What's wrong with bringing my gf to Thailand? Do girls not get on too well there? I'm not heading to PatPong or anywhere like that, so... Besides, there are enough cute, no brain girls over here in Japan... |

Also suggested by ECC. Are the rooms decent? It doesn't seem to have a website... |

I start the CELTA course at ECC in October and have booked the Reno. I found plenty of positive comments about it on the www so I reckon it should be fine. 980 bht for a "superior" room, slightly more for a "deluxe" room but the only difference is a TV which I doubt I'll need (homework!).
It would be good to hear from someone who has actually stayed there. |

She'll be okay so long as you and her can handle the constant attention the Thai girls will be giving you -- in a way that's amenieable to both of you.
Is she paying for the hotel? If not, I don't see where she gets off demanding a pool. But whatever, it's your girlfriend and your life. |

Yep, she's paying half for the hotel. I went with the Reno, so it's not too expensive.
As far as attention from the ladies, we've been through all that over here in Japan, so I think we've got it all worked out. ...I hope! |

I've booked the Reno too - 28 nights @ 1,180 baht per night for the deluxe room. I just hope there's a desk/table where I can worry the night away preparing my lessons! |

If not you can buy a cheap one on the fifth floor of MBK and carry it back to your hotel. 500B maybe. |

I'll also be taking the ECC course begining in August. I'm thinking A-one inn though--slightly easier on the pocket book. See you in a few days, amigo. |

Yeah, I was thinking about A-one quite a bit too, but in the end my gf really wanted the pool at the Reno. Although, one never knows, it could be a little mud pit or something.
Anyways, see you next Sunday for orientation, right? Looks like we've got a lot of work coming up... |
