The alcohol and BBQ's also make it a very special day. Plus all the fun things you can do with illegal fireworks. My brothers and I used to have a very special plastic cowboy in horse-riding position who was brought out every 4th of July to ride those little spinning flower firecrackers in traffic. His name was Cowpoke. He lasted for years, until one year after an awful lot beers we decided to test his astronomer abilities by sending him off in a bottle rocket. The next morning we found a leg with part of his riding crop melted onto it at the other end of the park. RIP Cowpoke. Yee-Haw.

In Bizimkent, there are fireworks every Friday and Saturday night. They're unnervingly close to the ground. The children gather on the balconies and say things like 'Şimşek!' and 'Uak!' and 'Anne cok korktum!'
