Is there any way around having to either collect your tax refund yourself or nominating another person to do this on your behalf. Why can't the Foreign Affairs not deposit it straight into either a Taiwan bank account or a foreign bank account. Does it have to be collected from local police station?

cheers

Not to my knowledge.

You have two choices, either collect it yourself or nominate someone to collect it for you.

The local police station has nothing to do with taxes. The tax office is where you do your taxes.

There are local police and there are foreign affairs police.

To the best of my knowledge neither of these has anything to do with taxes. All tax matters are handled by the tax office.

My experience is based largely in Taipei, and I suppose that it is possible that the FAP may handle some tax affairs in rural areas, but I have never heard of this being the case.

What makes you think that the police are involved in tax affairs?

I can assure you the tax bureau would not give infamously corrupt police of the Republic of China the authority to touch a pencil much less someone's taxes.
If you are Chinese as defined by the definitions of the Republic of China you could easily have your taxes deposited into a local bank account.
Unfortunately non Chinese are given the shaft by the notoriously racist occupational government of the Republic of China at every available opportunity.
You can not even delegate the authority to another of your trusted countrymen or women because according to the occupational government of the Republic of China on Taiwan all non Chinese are "dirty foreigners and criminals", not to be trusted.
They get you coming and going!
Welcome to Taiwan!
A.

So in the above, are you suggesting that tax refunds are deposited directly into the bank accounts of locals. I don't believe this to be the case. In fact to the best of my knowledge foreigners and local Chinese are treated equallly when it comes to returns.

The biggest difference that I am aware of is that local Chinese may only do their tax returns in the month of May. Foreigners on the other hand are given from February to May each year to file taxes.

How is that racism?

Actually you can nominate another foreigner to pick up and bank your refund cheque. What are you talking about?
