While at first I was delighted with my cheap flight to Istanbul, I now found out about the downside....
Flight arrives at Istanbul SAW at 21.30 o'clock and my hostel is in Sultanahmet. Looked at the airport's website but I don't get it!
Since a lot of you live in Istanbul, does anyone know how to get to Sultanahmet in the late evening? Are there any shuttle busses? Will I be able to cross the Bospurus at all? Honestly I don't want to spend a fortune on a taxi ride.

Get a taxi.

In no other ''profession'' would a ''professional'' be staying in a backpacker hostel and not want to get a taxi from the airport late in the evening. See what I mean about TEFL.

I am just going on a holiday to Istanbul to see what it's like.
I found out that a taxi is about 60 Euros and honestly I just don't want to spend that much on a ride. Everywhere I travel I try to use public transport, what's wrong with that? And what's that got to do with the TEFL business?

After an international flight to a city you don`t know late in the evening with luggage-get a taxi.

Pay is so crap in TEFL that hostels and buses are all you can afford.

I see. Luckily I work as a German teacher in the Dutch public system where salaries start at 2200Euros/gros Laughing
btw, I will just be there for a one week holiday so I won't travel with excessive luggage Wink and my flight is just from Amsterdam, nothing that I would call a tiring long-haul flight.

Maybe there is someone around who knows s.th. about the public transport.

You are lucky you are not a tefler but have some self respect and get a taxi. You are already tefling by staying in a hostel. Nobody on this forum knows much about public transport from the airport because with tefl wages they cannot afford to use planes very often. Cheap long distance buses and cheap hostels-yes they are a mine of information.

Why don`t you spend a few quid and have a good holiday and stay in a hotel? Why ''live'' like a tefler when you don`t have to?

Sorry i can't help out at the moment but I'll look into it for you. This airport is new and is a long way out on the Asian side. Your hostel is on the European side. It is a long I will try to find out for you. I have never been to the airport so i dont know at the moment.

WHAT? I do have a lot of self-respect but I don't see what that has to do with travelling a bit low-budget. Honestly I don't see the point of spending a lot of money on a hotel, when I am out all day. I'd rather save my money and spend it on sightseeing, nice dinners, souveniers and the like.
And airport taxis are always a rip-off! Using an expensive taxi when there is a cheap bus/train is just wasting money IMHO.

dmb, thanks for taking the time and looking it up. I browsed the net and it looks like there are shuttle busses to Taksim Square, but the main problem for me is that I arrive so late. The airport is so new that even the LP guide book only mentions it exists, but has no further information about transport.

Late at night from Taksim to S.A. will only take ten minutes and that wont be expensive, probably around 10 ytl. I never go there so dont take my word as gospel. I am however in taksim everyday of the week, so if you fancy abeer send a pm.
