I haven't found that to be true. I was a real teacher "back home" for nearly 20 years before I decided to continue being a real teacher in a foreign country. I've yet to encounter anyone "back home," real teacher or otherwise, who despises me for being an EFL teacher.
Maybe some of those despised TEFLers you're thinking of are despised for other reasons such as attitude, personality, and/or behavior. |

Ever wonder why the TEFL section in the Education Guardian or the TES is the second to last section with misc being last? |

Okay, it's a matter of definitions then.
I don't think I've ever met any real teachers back home who are familiar with TEFLers (by your definition,) so I can't say if TEFLers are despised there or not. |

Translation:
What "31" means is that all TEFLers must be under-qualified backpacker types. The fact that this isn't true will never register in his brain. That's what happens when one is unsuccessful, lonely and living in a land far from Mummy wondering "How did my life get so messed up?" |

| But Johnny TEFLing IS working for the man just for a lot less money. Sooner you realise that the better. Just have a look at what the students pay and what you get. |

I concur with most of you. Frankly, if you're enjoying what your doing, we shouldn't give a rat's @rse what other people think ... and that goes for those other people in tefl who clearly don't enjoy it and those who have no idea what it means to do this gig.
The problem when your young is that you tend to care what others say about you n what you do. I've reached the stage where not only do I have no interest in what other people think of me n what i do, I don't even care what happens in the big wide world out there. What DOES concern me is my family (wife, children etc). Yes, when one gets a bit older the old saying "I'm alright thankyou Jack" becomes more n more appropriate. You only get one crack at living on this planet. Caring what others think and do can frequently destroy your enjoyment of it. I try to enjoy what I do and enjoy life. The way to do that is to disregard or ignore others who try to make it miserable. We all get depressed once in a while but that should be our fault/problem and we deal with it ourselves. I suggest never getting down, depressed or for that matter, antagonised, by the actions and thoughts of others.
