In looking at classifieds for apartments, I keep reading "ambientes". I was wondering, does this mean bedrooms or just rooms?

Is an 1 ambiente apartment like a studio apartment? Or is it a one-bedroom apartment?

I've been seeing some prices on Clarin.com that seem suspiciously cheap. A 5 bedroom house in Belgrano for $500 pesos/month? WTF?! They have prices in dollars and pesos, and this said pesos, but somehow I find that very hard to believe.

Ambientes means rooms.
I think most use rooms as total rooms.
I.E. you have a living room and a bedroom -- 2 ambientes.

I doubt you are going to find a 5 bedroom apartment for 500 pesos .. but I don't know. Maybe it is very run-down. There are places just a few blocks away that are much worse than where I live.
Remember to, that you will need to buy furniture for anything that you buy unless it already has it.

Also, I think that the standard renting time is 2 years and you have to sign a contract. You probably need a D.N.I. too.

Well, some places I have talked to online say you only need a visa.
But I think for longer term, you need a D.N.I.
I understand there is a federal law not to rent to foreigners for more than 6 months at a time?Maybe someone else can correct me on this ..

do you have a passport or visa?
You can get some places to rent to you without much at all.
They cost a lot more though, from what I have seen.

Having a passport or a visa are not requirements for renting an apartment, its weird if they ask you that.
The landlord is only concerned about you paying the rent. Since you dont have a permanent residence in Argentina nor property here, they will ask you to pay some months in advance or sometimes they might ask you to secure payment with a higher security deposit. You will probably find furnished apartments specially equipped for foreigners.
In general, we argentines- rent apartments for a 2 years term, not furnished nor equipped and all expenses are paid separately by the tenant, this expenses are: "expensas" (building utilities), ABL (city taxes), Gas, Water, Electricity, Telephone, and eventually Cable TV and Internet. So be careful when you read in the newspaper apartments for rent at a AR$ 700 monthly rate, since you will have to add all expenses and you will probably end up coming with AR$ 1200 a month.
Good luck!!!

Flats, what are the average rents ? I think I should start by asking what zones are good but affordable. Thank you.
