|

I'd like to make some play dough clay for craft activities for our Summer Class students. I know you can buy a finished product, but I'd like it in bulk amounts to make "fossils", and other activities that require large quantities.
The following recipe is similar to most of the ones I've seen. The sticking point is I don't know how to find, or explain in Chinese, to our Chinese staff, what 'Cream of Tartar' is.
Any help would be appreciated.
Recipe:
(1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, 1 cup water, 1 tbsp oil, 2 tsp cream of tartar)
Mix all ingredients in a pot and stir over medium heat.
Mixture will be soupy with lumps. Suddenly it will form into a ball.
Remove from heat, and knead on a non-stick surface.
Useful for many types of projects.
Store in fridge, or allow creations to air dry.
Thanks much. |

Kes, is there a Carrefour in your city? Go to the toy section and you will find play dough. I am very sure you can find them at Walmart too. |

Substitute 1.5 times as much potato starch (they use it for some sauces). Look near the flour in the store. I tried finding cream of tartar at western stores a few months ago and totally struck out.
What I really want is cinnamon. |

Check out the website above for different recipes. I'm intrigued by the "Modeling Rice" although this just sounds like sticking your hands in a bowl of rice, and I don't know if it will harden like it sounds like you want it to, but it can't hurt to try it!
Also below is another recipe not requiring cream of tartar.
Modeling Rice
1 cup long grain rice
3 cups water
1tsp food coloring
Bring water to boil in saucepan add rice and food coloring. Cover and simmer on low heat for 15 minutes. Uncover and continue to simmer for 10 minutes stirring occasionally. Cool and use, store in fridge. (THIS IS really messy..do it outside)
Kool-Aid Play Dough - Mix 1 cup sifted flour, 1/2 cup salt, 3 tablespoons oil and 1 small package of Kool-Aid or other unsweetened powdered drink. Add 1 cup boiling water. Stir the ingredients together, knead mixture until it forms a soft dough. |
