Has anyone read about the recent quotes from a Chinese general? In short - he stated that China would use nuclear weapons if the US interfered with their efforts to regain its "renegade territory" - Taiwan. Has there always been tension between China and Taiwan? Is this a recent development or an on-going conflict? What is the tone in Taiwan regarding these comments? |

This is a wearisome topic for those who have lived here a while. Do some research.
The straights issue has been around for decades, dating back to the time when the communists took over the mainland. It is niether new, nor are this general's comments of any particular concern. He even said himself that his comments were his opinion and not policy.
The tone here? The commies are always saying things and have been for quite a while. Most people here just go on with life. |

Travel Kat.
I would not worry too much about the comments made by the Chinese General. This has been going on for ages and I am sure that most people here in Taiwan not a bit worried. Taiwan is a good place to stay. |

Thank you all for your comments and links; I appreciate the clarification. I thought this had been an underlying conflict for a while but I didnt know if these comments were indicative of impending action by the Chinese to regain Taiwan. It appears that they are all talk and no action.
Thanks again for the clarification. |
