Large province in China has a weekly, televised, martial arts competition on Saturday night. They were touting a China vs USA match a couple of weeks ago. Featured were about 4 English teachers from USA(?) and one Pole. The guys representing the States were flabby, inept, and displayed few fighting skills. Also included was a very butch lesbian. One of the guys looked Indian and another Hispanic.

The Chinese fighters were mostly well trained fighters, lean, muscular, and fast. They smashed the laowei. The lez gave up in about 30 seconds. One guy was knocked out of the ring within a minute, barely remaining conscious. The other guys were more or less shamelessly knocked around. One of the Chinese guys was particularly dangerous. He did go easy on his "opponent." He might have killed him otherwise. He intentionally blackened his eye with a well placed spin kick. The Pole made a decent showing, but also lost.

After the "fights" there was a lot of Chinese flag waving, confetti, and a great celebration.

The following week, they showed some footage of the laowei playing with kindergarten children at a local school, perhaps to explain that the people in the ring were not really fighters, but "teachers."

Why would people willingly participate in such a sham, particularly FTs?

Maybe they were 'ordered' to participate. Common around these parts. I have seen teachers 'ordered' to do TV spots, hand out flyers, etc. which of course is not their job.

Maybe also coerced or paid?

You have to realize, as much as this is to prove that foreigners love Chinese culture, it has to show that they are not THAT good yet and the Chinese are still better.

In the end, both objectives accomplished.

Oh man.. I want to be invited.. I would insist on a few of the headmasters participation as well.. Is this a scheduled event? Crap - they'd probably edit the part where I spank them like delinquent children anyway.. Nevermind..

I wanted to compete in the Chinese speech competition for foreigners, but I didn't because I figured they only wanted laowais who LOOKED like laowais.
