Hey everyone,

I will be having an interview with AEON this week. I understand that there will be a 2-hour info. session followed by a group interview. I will also be teaching a 5 minute demo. If I do well, I guess I will be invited back for a 2nd-day interview. Do you have any advice on interviewing with AEON or with AEON in general. I have already read the posts on AEON so I have learned a lot already. But, I would appreciate any advice you have. Thank you very much!

Sincerely,

Peyton

There are a lot of posts telling you what to do and how to do it in the interview, do a search here using AEON Interview as keywords, and a lot of good helpful stuff will pop up. My only advice to you would be to speak clearly, and smile a whole lot. Be as personable as possible. It works.

Good luck, amigo. Cool

I have learned a lot from these forums, so I guess I should give my input and hopefully help others.
Group Interview. nearly 2 hours of talking about AEON, a video, and a Q&A. Group interview: you work with a group on a lesson plan. You discuss it with the group ( the purpose of it is see how well you work with the lesson, if you give any input or not, are you quiet, also shows your perosnality, be sure to smile or look like your happy about this group thing). The 5 minute lesson plan for me was the most difficult, I spent hours on it, practicing with props and such. I even made a handout which I never got too, what a waste! I thought I did horrible., I was shaky and nervous, eventhough I have spoken in public before. I think it was because the recruiters were evaluating you: if you smiled, if you got the students speaking, how creative you were, and so on. I did horrible on my presentation, but at least I smiled the whole way through. What I learned is that it is all about personality, rather than how you teach. I think they want a warm personality, happy, energetic. The questionaire and grammer part was the most most stressful for me. We have 40 minutes, I went straight for the grammer part. circle the wrong word/words in the sentence. the second part was either the sentence is right or it was wrong and re-write it if it is wrong. That part was difficult. I remember one sentence was adjective order. Something like: The green large round umbrella Japanese something...... (thats not the sentence, but you get it) Anyways it requires adjective order. Others seemed a lot more difficult. Some were correct but I didnt know. The questionaire asked questions like, why you want to go to Japan, 3 things you would miss about home, what you would contribute to AEON besides teaching, and a few others, I think there were 10 questions in all. Thats it. Went home!!!

So, since I lived near the place they said they might call me within 2 weeks if I got the individual interview or not. Some got next day interviews cuz they flew in. So I got a call nearly a week later with an interview a week after that. Thats 2 weeks, arghhh!!!

Individual interview - They started me out with the 10 min lesson plan immediatly. I had like ten minutes to create a lesson from a page in the workbook. One part of the page was grammer, which was something like perfect present, I thought perfect past, did I screw that up!!, 2nd part of the page was a conversation. So I had to identify what level 1-10 it was, I thought 8, but what do I know. I just made them answer the fill in the blank using the pefect past( suppose to be perfect present). Did the conversation part. Had a few minutes left and just asked them question similar to the conversation questions. So they pretended to be Japanese students learning to speak. So they looked confused, or were shy to answer the questions. just smile! be friendly! and help them out if they sont know. Pick on them, if no one answers. So I had a quesitonaire on how I did on the lesson plan, %of student speaking to teacher speaking, what I would re-do. While I did this, they wrote comments about my lesson. So the asked me about the lesson plan. Since I got the grammer part wrong in the first place, I told them the wrong answers, even though they got it right. One thing to remember, Japanese students study grammer a lot more than Americans do, I learned that lesson. So dont teach them it, unless you really know it. Let them answer the fill in the blanks, if you get a page like that, and if it sounds wrong, correct them. I thought a good student speaking ratio, but it was in their opinion about 20%, I thought 70%. It was because I spent time teaching grammer. They commented on me, said I was warm, friendly, I smiled, seemed inviting to a Japanese student, dispite my teaching style. theyll teach you their style, but your personality they cant.
After that part, they did the usual interview questions, someone else wrote about that, but what I remember is why I want to go to Japan. They read your essay, but they dont say anything about it. They looked at your resume and asked parts about it. I worked overseas before, and they asked about that. And they asked questions that youre questionaire. They also asked where you would like to work. I said anywhere near the coast or mountains, but not in a metropolis like Tokyo or Osaka, nor a rural town smaller than 300K.
It only lasted about 90 mins actually mine was 75 mins.

So now im waiting to see if I get the job. I dont think there are openings in the following months, maybe not until late in the year into next year. I read somewhere the NOVA has a 7 months waiting list. I think a lot of people who did well would not want to wait that long, so I hope my chances are increased, though I would like to leave in September.

So I got the email. I didnt get the job. Bummer.
Anyways, at least I know what to expect in other interviews.
My friend was offered a job in January. I dont think she will take it, becuase she was offered two other offers starting in early Sept.
So I guess AEON isnt offering anytime soon. Good luck Peyton.
