Im a Canadian English teacher and freelance graphic artist/writer ( www.portfolios.com/exotica ). Ive freelanced as a journalist and illustrator in Hanoi and Prague, while giving lessons on the side. I tried doing that in Brazil, and dont recommend it (slavery never ended there.nuff said) I am looking at doing something similar in Taiwan, but am looking for some feedback. ive gotta get out of toronto
cheers

Yes, it is very likely that you can earn a living as a writer on Taiwan. There is a reasonably large demand for English writers and the demand is increasing.
Foreign artist find it a little more difficult. Musicians usually do well. Graphic artist will have to compete with the locals for the local business. Unless you understand the little nuances of Taiwanese culture and superstition you may find it difficult.
The biggest problem for most people is the fact that wages are deteriorating or stagnating as the local economy flounders.
You may be spending more time teaching than you might like just to make ends meet.
Good luck!

Maybe, but writing what? I suspect most if it is writing technical manuals, trade journals and the like. Hardly exciting stuff. |

Hmm, sounds a little discouraging. Well, i didnt think Taiwan would be the new Prague or Paris, but i was told by a former teacher/freelancer that it was the best time he ever had.
I suppose my interests are a little specialized, ( www.portfolios.com/exotica and exotica.freeservers.com ), i have done my most interesting work for rather oddball publications, like Think Magazine in Prague. That said. i did quite a bit of writing and editing for AdAge and Vietnam Investment Review in Hanoi, so i will do anything if it pays.
It would be cool to do something actually interesting for English language learners, most of the textbooks are awfully dry. Cartoons have that potential to transcend language. |
