Hi all!
Anyone knows about this university in Wuhan and Start Consulting Co. (recruiting agency) ?
I received an offer for teaching French there, seems like a good one but id like to hear some feedback from previous / current teachers there; + any useful tips or info about Wuhan.
Do you know the best deal to get to Wuhan from London? Or Beijing to Wuhan?
Thanks a lot buddies |

You can also fly in from Shanghai or maybe even Hong Kong. |

Hello, sdisunshine! I'm an old Wuhan hand, since I have been here for more than 3 1/2 years, and it looks as if I will be here for a few more years to come!
Flights from London to Wuhan are not direct. If you choose to fly Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow, you will have to change at Shanghai - and that will involve changing airports, too, probably. The international airport is Pudong, but you may have to make your way to Hongqiao airport in order to catch a domestic flight to Wuhan.
If, on the other hand, you fly Air China, you will have to change at Beijing Capital Airport (Shou Du Ji Chang) for a domestic flight, usually with either China Eastern or China Southern, for Wuhan Tian He airport, which is located about 25 km from the centre of the city. There is an airport shuttle bus, and the fare from the airport to Hankou is only 15 RMB and to Wuchang is (I think) 30 RMB, much cheaper than the taxi!
As for the university you mentioned, I have never taught there (nor have I had any dealings whatsoever with this or any other agency), but I imagine that the university must be on the south side of the Yangtze (Chang Jiang) river in the Wuchang area of the city, since most of the universities in Wuchang are located south of the river, where, so they say, the air is much cleaner. The East Lake is also there, and many Wuhanese citizens like to go there on the weekend, since it is a vast area for people to enjoy.
Depending upon your tastes, there are plenty of bars and restaurants for you to enjoy in both Hankou and Wuchang, and the number of expats in Wuhan has been growing steadily in recent years. There are a number of posters on Dave's who are also old Wuhan hands, so perhaps they could also chip in with some advice and hints about how to get the most from this city, even if it does have a reputation for being one of the hottest in China (the temperatures can go up to as high as 42 degrees C!).
If you have any further questions about Wuhan, please feel free to PM me. |

Hey! I have lived and worked in Wuhan for over a year now at a university in the Wuchang area - south of the Chang Jiang. I like the city and am returning after the Summer holidays for another year, but at a different university.
As has been mentioned, it can be oppressively hot in Wuhan during the lengthy Summer months. The main issue is the excessively high humidity that makes the days so uncomfortable. The shopping and entertainment are satisfactory and there is plenty for the adventurous to do.
The university that you have been offered a job at has good quality students and has a good reputation in the city. It has a beautiful campus beside a lake and has good public transport access to the downtown area of Wuchang. Students are from the many different ethnic groups that comprise the Chinese population, and their homes are spread across the country.
I was offered a job there too - but declined it, as I got a better salary and teaching hours offer at another university in Wuhan.
If you have any specific questions about life in Wuhan , feel free to pm or email them to me.
Good luck! |

Pour autant que je sache, cette universite est situee a Wuchang - comme quelq'un l'a deja mentionne.
From what I have heard - but have not been able to verify on my own - this is just one among many regular publicly-owned universities, so don't expect too much. It seems to be a good university as Chinese ones go (I can, upon returning home, check what ranking it has if any, nationally).
As for how to get there, I suppose your best deal is by flying to HONG KONG, or possibly to GUANGZHOU (there may be a direct flight from London; there certainly is one from Paris and Munich).
From HONG KONG to GUANGZHOU it is a complicated 140 haul either by train or bus or a combination (you have to cross a boundary that separates Hong Kong from the nominally-socialist CHinese hinterland, thus changing buses or trains is inevitable unless you take a direct through train from HK to Peking and get off at WUHAN).
From GUANGZHOU, it is 1200 kms or so to Wuhan, an easy one-day trip in aircon trains.
Of course, you are free to take a domestic flight there - but that would involve complicated trips to and from airports. You could, of course, take a domestic flight all the way from HK. |
