I teach an adult student 1-on-1. Today he asked me that in the lesson tonight could we learn about basketball? "Sure!" I said. Only now do I realise that I know just a few words about basketball.

Can you help? So far I have these words:
basketball
slam dunk
pass
shot
3-pointer
...
???
!!!

Any help appreciated. I thought we'd do a sort of basketball commentary thing, and have him compose a short story, but any other ideas would be welcome!

Cheers,

A great word is dribble (for its several meanings). You can demonstrate the basketball meaning in front of class, then pass the ball to a student to continue dribbling.

post
backboard
glass
in the paint
rebound
triple double
free throw
foul

I had a pretty good lesson where I taught my class how to play American football. It wasn't until I really sat down to write the lesson, though, that I realized how much there was to teach them. It's not like basketball, which the majority of students could play, and thus they just needed to have the terms defined. I was basically teaching them from the ground up. Then when I got out on the field with them it was even more difficult, because even when they got the general hang of the rules they were doing things that, while legal, were totally illogical to the point of the game. Watch your students do a backwards toss every time they come close to getting tagged, and then watch as both sides fumble the ball 3 or 4 times during the course of that one play. It was fun, though.

Anyways, I know this was about basketball, but I thought I'd share an experience from another sports lesson anyway.
