I'm currently considering teaching in either Taiwan or Shanghai. What would you say are the general differences between the two places?

What are the advantages Laughing and disadvantages Crying or Very sad of both places?

Shanghai is a city in CHINA, and Taiwan is... you are comparing Scotland to London, or NYC to Alaska!

I would venture to say that your chances of getting legal work in Shanghai are grater, and your choices of jobs are more numerous too.
Taiwan wants to import expats that have a grounding in Mandarin, to teach at primary schools. All other jobs are crooked.

I went to Taiwan years ago - all the schools I looked at seemed very dodgy. This is less so in Shanghai. Maybe I've been lucky, but I've never been ripped off and the school owners are generally cool. Get a business visa for 6 months and just freelance at various schools. Then get a Shanghainese girlfriend and watch where the money goes!! Laughing Wink Cool

Roger, do you have any info on the primary schools in Taiwan who want Mandarin speakers? Sounds like a plan to me! PM me any leads you might have.

There is a somewhat lengthy thread on this issue on the TAIWAN forum!
My information was gleaned from a report in SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST's Education supplement! The salary offered was 60'000 NT$ - not the very top as far as I can see!
