Guity, I did that. And have never regretted it.

I've known about a dozen people who fit this mold, and every single one of them says exactly that same thing. The only bad decision is no decision, as long as you have at least a modicum of common sense.

I couldn't disagree with this more. People who have no idea what they want to do are at the greatest risk of doing nothing at all. Figure it out at home, and you could spend 20 years of your life in a dead-end job you hate, sitting on your couch, getting nowhere, and filling yourself with regrets along the way. A dream chased, even if it doesn't turn out like you hoped, is far better than one let slip quietly away.

it is KIND to warn someone that REALITY exists

I can't think of anything less kind. There are people all over the planet who have stretched the bounds of what the complacent call "reality," and as a result of not knowing any better, have led truly extraordinary lives. These few are fortunate to have escaped the shackles imposed upon so many by perception of limitation. The boring NEVER lead extraordinary lives. That's what makes them boring.

OP: you're 26. You're young, but life gets shorter every day. Take life by the nards now, or regret it later. Life is what you make of it, and the only REALITY -- the only real limitations put upon you -- are put there by the laws of physics, and by your own mind. Your choices all sound good. Pick one, and get going. The clock is ticking.

Update for those who might care...

I have decided to go to South Korea. I figured, if I was unsure what to do, I should go to a larger city, make more money, and not pay airfare upfront. Plus the fact that I can pursue my interests in Buddhism.

Between the day of the original post and now, I was offered a job in Honduras. Because of my lifelong interest in Spanish, I briefly considered going. However, a FT there gave me some very honest information. He told me that most of the female teachers were victims of armed robbery and they had 10 hour workdays, and not to count on learning Spanish or even being able to go out at night.

He liked his experience, but was honest...that was appreciated.

I appreciate the thought that went into many posts.

And for those who think I'm some nut, fine. But I tell you one thing...it takes a very smart person to get seven years of real journalism experience. I'm not some dumb bunny, and didn't mean to come off like I was.

Congratulations!

Life decisions are great, aren't they? Most of the hand wringing lies behind you, most of the adventure ahead.

Enjoy SK. May your mind and spirit both find what they're seeking. Have fun.

Sounds to me as though she's already sorted it out at home and reached the decision that she'd like to broaden her horizons by teaching abroad. Good for her I say!

I do not believe anyone accused the OP of being a "dumb bunny"--whatever that is. But yes she did come off sounding like Miss Muffet--in an updated version as Drama Queen.

And the moonraven has never advocated doing nothing with one's life--quite the contrary. I have always taken James Dic*key's statement literally: "If you are bored with your life, risk it."

Not all of us, however, have the same comfort level with risk-taking. Nor do we all have the same degree of elasticity when living outside our normal sociolinguistic milieu.

Frankly, it makes a whole lot more sense to make a Decision Tree when facing a major life decision than it does to ask a bunch of strangers on Dave's....Or to consult the I Ching--like I do. Several thousand years of Chinese common sense is not to be sneezed at.

Darkbloom, your post of 28 July is just inspiring. That's all I have to say about it.
StephPoet, good luck. You have a lot of fun/trouble/experience/etc. ahead of you, as you well know just from living to the point that you so far have. I'm sure you'll be fine.
