|
|
My hubby and I have a few days off this month and would like to go to a ryokan with onsen in or near the kansai region. The problem is this: We want to find onsen that allows men and women to bath together *gasp* and is in the mountains. We want an outside onsen. I've done a search on the internet but most of it comes up in Japanese which unfortunately is not so helpful. My Japanese is not good enough to read these sites. The other thing is that we just want an affordable vacation. Nothing too posh. Simple is good. Anyone been somewhere like this they can recommend? |

The only one I know of is the Arima onsen in Mt Rokko. No idea if they allow mixed bathing though

If you want a unique experience, try the Okayama villas. these are special ryokan reserved for use by foreigner guests. japanese can not make a reservation unless they are accompanied by a foreigner. Well recommended and sufficently 'country' in Okayama. Im sure there are onsen there too

PS outside onsen are called "rotenburo" in japanese. |

It is pretty rare to have mixed onsens. Arima is good, Kurama onsen just a bit north of Kyoto is good, Shirahama is great, and Kinosaki on the Japan Sea coast to name a few. Mixed onsens are either where you pay for your own small bath usually in your hotel or a really really remote one and I don't know of any personally. |

10 years ago we went to a really great rotenburo in Wakayama. It's in the mountains, not easy to get to but it's worth it. The "onsen" is basically just a natural hot spot in a river. We stayed in Shirahama and went to Kawayu on a day trip but it is probably possible to stay there too.
It's in Japanese but there are some pics at the following link:

Oh, I just found this link in English. It's a little bit old but...
