Husband and myself have decided to take ourselves off to China in September on a package tour, if possible. I wanted to ask:

Have any of you done something similar or has anyone had a problem with being non-Japanese when it comes to booking a package tour? We can both speak Japanese but a friend of ours once wanted to book and had everything settled with the agent on the phone until it came to taking his details. Then suddenly it was, "Oh, Japanese only. Very sorry". (His Japanese is fluent and it wasn't clear to the agent that she was dealing with an Irishman until he gave his name). This was 10 years ago, mind you.

Secondly, is it any extra hassle for non-Japanese to get tourist visas for China from the PRC Embassy/ Consulate here in Japan?

I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.
