Well, Dezza, you may care to know that attrition on Hong Kong NET jobs is pretty high and the only reason why the EMB gave you that white lie about the discrepancy between vacancies and applications is this: they are struggling themselves to rectify some of the procedural bullshit that regularly fobs off applicants or jobholders seeking to renew their contracts.
While a high degree of professionalism is required of you they are bureaucrats with that time-honoured ingrained attitudinal deficiency called 'haughtiness'. They can afford to dawdle, and they don't think it is a bit daunting for job seekers to be notified that they are welcome here 2 weeks before the term begins. They have the idea that they are doing you a favour, so you must jump and kowtow and seize on the job once your employment is confirmed.
Fact is that they were somewhat surprised to learn that there were far more terminations than renewals last time contracts expired. |

You were not hired but selected... indeed.... The guy had built a database and sold it to principals just another pimp.

Hi,
I was also interviewed in July by the EMB. I've received confirmation from EMB that they've verified all my documents; and will soon distribute my CVs to the schools.
I'm not sure how many schools is going contact me. It'd be nice if someone can tell me what's going to happen next; but I guess I'll find out soon.

To Dezza and others still waiting on word from Hong Kong......... IGNORE the words of ZH who CLEARLY is talking out of the wrong orifice!!
Everyone who can read the English newspaper here definitely knows about the difficulites of recruitment/retention of NETs. Anyone who says anything different is either a) not in HK at all b) 'reeling you in' or c) just trying to sound informed while not knowing the reality.
The EMB has not recruited enough NETs to even fill all vacated posts (i.e. by NETs who did not renew contracts for this year) One of the reasons for this is certainly their poor communication with candidates. It is not unusdual for teachers to be interviewed by EMB or their agents and then being left in limbo for weeks or months.
I had my interview in HK in March, felt positive about employment and yet had no word from EMB all through April and May. I resigned from my job in anticipation of a NET job and was getting twitchy by June, when I finally got a job offer. Ohhhh great..... a month to pack up my life and move to a new country.
Many in this situation simply give up and go elsewhere or stay where they are. Nevertheless the EMB then loses potential NETs.
I wonder how many are 'lost' in this way????
For your further information, some of the (western) leaders of the NET program are currently in Canada on a recruiting mission. If you can make contact in the next few days, you may get info direct from the horse's mouth. |
