|

Hello all,
I am very new to this forum even though I have been reading it for quite some time and find all the posting very amusing and helpful. I am moving to Ankara next week and I don't see a lot of information regarding teaching or living there. I have done some searches and it did appear in a few queries, but not really the info for which I am looking. I am specifically interested in things to do in Ankara. I am not just talking about bars, clubs and pubs, but about everything else (don't get me wrong I am soliciting that info as well but I can find that on the 'sticky' post). All the guide books haven't really been helpful on things to see in Ankara other than listing a few museums, but what about down time? Any advice would be greatly appreciated and those living in Ankara would be rewarded with a beer or dinner for some extra information.
Thanks

ankara is rather quiet on this forum. Have a look at mymerhaba.com for local info.
Welcome to turkey |

The infamous Hash House Harriers are not everyone's cup of tea, but the Ankara Hash are certainly well-organised. I ran with them about 5 years ago ... and they're a friendly bunch ... about half Turk and half expat. Every Sunday at 12 o'clock they meet up next to Segmenler Park in ankaya. Then they bus you out to some reservoir or forest outside the city. You don't have to be 4-minute-miler to be a hasher ... most of the Ankara Hashers probably couldn't run one in ten minutes :-)
If you want to find out more about (W)ankara, as we in the Istanbul Hash call them, then click on this link:

You can see on their web site that this weekend they're planning on going camping at Kesikkpr ... sounds fun. |

Hi J,
I've lived in Ankara for about a year and i love it. It's such an easy place to live. There are some great restaurants - sushi, chinese, mexican, whatever you fancy. Then there's the obligatory tour up Atakule Tower, nice views on a clear, smog free day. Just outside the city (about a 15 min drive) there is a lovely lake which you can walk around. It takes about 2 hours to do the full 11km but if you're feeling lazy, like i often do, then a walk to the boat house and back is about 45 mins.
Eating out is a fav pass time for my friends and i and there is even a website set up where you can order (in English as my Turkish is pants!!) from a huge array of restaurants and they will have it delivered to your door - how great is that?!?! They have the same system in Istanbul too.
There are many good gyms too if that is your thing. I know i use mine just as a place to hang out when the sun is shining as well as going to classes and using the pools.
So when do you arrive in Ankara? And where will you be working?
Let me know - good luck with the move!

You obviously have an upper middle class Turk to pay for it all. I wonder what he is getting in return. It must be worth it. |

31,
Everything i do and everywhere i go is paid for by me. I have worked hard to get where i am now. For your information i'm not an ESL teacher but a primary school teacher here in Ankara so maybe the pay is better...
Please keep your thoughts to yourself!! |
