Go for the new job!! See my post 'Chinese - Dishonoured Contract'!! The Chinese have no qualms about dishonouring a Contract, so in China do as the Chinese do. Like you I'm had innumerable experiences of being ill-treated! Get a better offer - go for it!! Just be sure first that it does exist in the format and with the benefits offered however. Tell the now-Contracted employer you have been made a better offer and have ALREADY returned all money they've given you.

What's that, old sport? This is your second post here, and you are already taking side with law breakers, opportunists, gamblers?

How seriously shall we take your claim to have been the object of unfair treatment at the hands of unscrupulous Chinese employers in cahoots with British partners???

This sort of "advice" is unwelcome and bad for the image of all of us, please refrain from making such nonsensical posts.

You won't last long here with your attitude! One employer wrongs you - so you feel you can wrong the next CHinese employer no matter whether it is a good one or not... a perverse logic!

By the way, even if they act in the way described by you it is unwise to emulate their behaviour for the simple reason that the local law can always be used against you, and there is no recourse against arbitrary deportation decisions and confiscation of your RMB!

I find some of the comments here somewhat disappointing. As someone who has spent a lot of time over the years trying to advise people of how to avoid trouble with schools and deal with problems when they occur, I am disappointed to see that some teachers seem to feel totally justified in behaving as badly as some schools do.

That is not a valid reason for this teacher doing the wrong thing by this school.

I personally consider the suggestion that it is okay for teachers to do the wrong thing by schools to be a ridiculous attempt to justify the unjustifiable. Didn't your parents teach you that two wrongs don't make a right.

It is however reassuring to see that the overall majority here seem to agree that the teacher should be entitled to leave the position provided that he gives an appropriate amount of notice and pays back any money that he is not entitled to keep.

Maybe I am misreading this, but I read this as suggesting that the OP should lie to the school and say that he has already paid back the money that he is not entitled to. For everyones sake I do hope that the OP does the right thing here.

I believe in the concept that what goes around comes around, and hopefully for Free-as-a-bird this will not happen!
